If you want a laugh, check out the current version of the Airfix 1/72 F86, which claims to have decals for Senator Glenn's machine. Check out the Dark Sea Grey cockpit interior and wheel wells! Check out the bright orange ID bands! And this is my country's No.1 kit manufacturer (well, OK, they're actually made in France nowadays, but you get my meaning)

Hey rangerj, maybe we should start a new Forum for us Senior Citizens? You forgot Uncle Miltie, Roller Derby and Midget Wrestling. Sure I remember rabbit ears, used to screw around with them all the time trying to get rid of the snow. On the ads, the first one escapes me, but the second was Johnny Red Cap calling for Philip Morris and I think the third is Lucky Strike Means Fine Tabacco. Was that the one with the dancer with great legs inside a pack of cigarettes? Never had Bosco, but Ovalteen goes way back to when I was a kid. Hated it, but I think it's still around.

It seems I saw something about Ted williams and John Glen somewhere. Ted williams flew Panthers off of the Hornet (or was it ?). Any way, John Glenn was not anywhere near as famous at that time as Ted Williams was. I'll have to dig into that one now that you got my curiosity going!

I remember seeing Glenn on the $64,000 question on a black and white TV with about a 10inch screen. Do you remember rabbit ears? Then there was Red Skelton, Pinky Lee, The Honeymooners, and the Friday Night Fights.

rangerj, ditto on Senator Glenn. I didn't always agree wiyh his Politics, but I always admired him as an American Hero. I'm close to his age and I still remember watching him on the $64,000 Question TV show (on my 17" B&W Philco TV). I recall some controversy over his appearance at the time, but the details escape me.

mummykitty, This one was finshed in overall Floquil Old Silver, a MRR color, with various panels masked and sprayed with ModelMaster non-buffing Aluminum & Steel.
I have another finished with Alclad2, which I think gives a slightly better finish.

rangerj, I had to go look that info up myself... I was quite curious when I saw the USAF a/c. I think I also read that in Korea, Ted Williams was John Glenn's wingman at one point... do you know if this is correct or if I'm thinking of someone else?

Anyone notice that you have a Marine flying a USAF F-86? The services often assign personell to other branches for "familiarization" with the equipment, proceedures, and tactics of the other services, which is what Senator Glenn was doing at that time in Korea.

He flew corsairs in WWII. He would later fly an RF-8 Crusader on a record breaking flight from California to New York. He was on the TV game show the $64,000 question, and later was selected to be an astronaut . He was the first US astronaut to orbit the earth in a Mercury capsule named Friendship 7.

A few years ago he ended his long career in service to his country as a US senator from Ohio, which is his native State. He is still flying with his wife Annie as his co-pilot.
Is that the "Right Stuff", or what? "God speed John Glenn".

He is a true American hero in every sense of the word.

Oh, I almost forgot, the F-86 looks great. Where can I get a set of those decals? rangerj

Adam/Mel, it's a very nice kit with no major vices. Makes a pretty straight forward build. Biggest problem I had was getting the sway braces to fit the drop tanks and wing, but that was more me than the kit. I built mine OOB, but there are lots of aftermarket resin and photo-etch if you wan't to soup it up. The other modern tool F-86 in 1/48 is the Acadamy release, but I haven't built one so can't make a fair comparison.

Littlebird, the decals came from an old Superscale sheet, an Aeromaster sheet and some of the kit stencils. I think the Superscale and Aeromaster sheets are OOP but they do get re-issued now and then. EagleStrike has some sheets still avail for the F-86.

Pix, I agree on the Sabre. I build mostly WWII, but I like the Sabre for it's clean design as well as historical signifigance.

Nice job, Rick ! The F-86 is one of the only post-war jets I like. It has such sleek lines, and your paint job and decals do it justice. Well done !
