Revell's 1/48 P-51B/C Mustang
Posted by oortiz10 on Sunday, August 26, 2012 5:28 PM

I had Revell's 1/48 P-51B/C Mustang that I got on the cheap from the local Michael's craft store.  I decided to use it as a practice kit for natural metal finishes.  I was hesitant to build it in NMF because the fit was terrible and I knew I'd be struggling with the seams, and also because the kit's plastic was rough and "pebbly".  I figured this kit would be a good test of my NMF skills to this point.

This is my fourth NMF kit, and it's finished using Alclad and MM enamels.  The weathering's done using Flory washes and pastels.  The only parts that were not from the box are the decals that are from my spares box, some unshrouded exhausts and drop tanks from a Tamiya kit, drop tank plumbing made of fine solder and wire insulation from an old pair of ear buds, and simple tape seat belts.

Here's the plane I was trying to depict:  P-51C 43-25054.  I had the 20th's nose stripes but I didn't have the nose art for this plane.  The codes and serials are all decals from my spares box, but the tail's plane code I had to paint on.

I know this build's not on par with some of the brilliant Mustang builds out there,  but I think it's a solid 3-footer.  I'm trying to improve on my natural metal finishes, so please don't hesitate to provide some feedback.

Thanks for lookin'!

Wow.  Very nice looking work to me.

I really like how the striping on the nose looks - very solid work all around as far as I am concerned.

Looks good! I especially like the wearing off of the wing stripes at the leading edge.

Yes, the airframe was painted in white aluminum overall, with different panels shaded with different colors of Alclad.

Thanks for the kudos and thanks for lookin'!

O, I'd be happy to have that pony in my stable!  Looks pretty good from where I'm sitting!

I'm about to start a Revell Mustang, and it will be my first NMF.  If I can get it to look half as good as yours I will be thrilled.

Thanks for the kudos everybody.  Much appreciated!

Reasoned, yes, the kit has recessed panel lines.  Problem is, the plastic was very soft with my boxing and the panel lines were inconsistent, also my fuse was pretty warped.  So because of the poor fit, warpage and the weak details, many of the panel lines had to be rescribed on my build.

Again, thanks for lookin'!

Cheers,

Nice job, both on your very clean build, and on your natural metal finish!  I think you captured the look of those oxidized aluminum panels very well, nicely weathered, too.

Plus, it's the Revell-Monogram Mustang, with a venerable past.  I like both versions of the kit, the original tooling, and this revised tooling with the recessed panel lines.  It's a fun build, even with things that can be improved.

Well done!
