Tamiya 1/48 F-16C Arkansas ANG
Posted by Fly-n-hi on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 3:29 PM

Hi guys.  I just finished this one for the Second Strike Viper GB.  Its the 1/48 Tamiya F-16C build OOB, including the decals.  Tamiya decals suck in case you didn't already know.

I used Mr. Color and Alclad II paints.  The weathering was post shading plus a little bit of oil filtering.  The only panel lines that got washed were the lines that separated the leading edge flaps from the wings (I'm moving away from panel line washes since they tend to look cartoonish).

Anyway, hope you enjoy it!:

Great stuff!!  Excellent build!  My hometown is about 20 minutes from the Fort Smith AR base where these birds used to be..now they've got the A-10s.  But, you gotta love the hog art on the F-16 tails and the A-10 noses!!

Man, that's a good looking model airplane!  Fly-n-hi, you've done a magnificent job on that F-16.  I'm truly impressed, and it makes me want to build one to replace my ancient Monogram F-16A.  I tend to agree with you regarding the panel washes.  Some models begin to look like a painted "grid" when the wash is heavy-handed.  You nailed it brother!  Thanks for the inspiration.

Very nice job. I think your finish/weathering is right on. Really like what you did with the exhaust nozzle.

Great looking bird!!!  I've got one in my stash just because of the squadron markings!

Luv it! The tail decals came out looking great. Would you give a description of how you detailed the exhaust unit?

Thanks alot guys! I really appreciate the comments.

The cans were pretty easy...just alot of steps.  The first thing I did was to cut apart the exhaust interior piece.  This makes painting the interior easier.  I used Mr. Color 316, which is a sort of off-white color, and AB'd some thinned out Mr. Color black to create the sooty areas:

I painted the flame holder jet exhaust and weathered it with Tamiya weathering powders:

The can itself was primed with Tamiya primer then painted with Mr. Color 316.  Then I brushed some dark grey pastels over the white.  Then I applied Alclad II Gloss Black Base (which is great stuff BTW) and then Alclad II Stainless Steel:

I masked off the petals using thin strips of Tamiya tape, painted the areas between the petals regular Alclad II Steel, masked that off then painted the dark areas a 50/50 mixture of Alclad II Jet Exhaust and Gunmetal:

I also painted the ring that joins to the fuselage Alclad II Aluminum to match the shroud at the back of the plane:

I brushed some Tamiya blue weathering powder over the shroud to give it that blue tinge that you see on alot of PW F-16s.

I used to fly EMB-120s in and out of Ft. Smith from DFW for another airline that I used to work for (ASA).  Saw the F-16s all the time!  There was a little cafe in that airport that made some good apple pie!

First the SuperBug and now this?   Beautiful work, Fly-n-hi.   Clean and squared away is a good look.

Great job! Sharp weathering and I'd say the time and work involved on afterburner cans was more than worth it!

Thanks Dre and Gamera!

First the SuperBug and now this?...

Yeah, I've actually got two Superbugs...that Royal Maces "E" that you saw and an another 1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18F.  I didn't build it for any GBs so I haven't gotten around to posting pics of it yet.  I guess I'm being lazy since I actually finished the "F" first.  I'll post 'em soon.
