Calling all P-38 Buffs
Posted by usaf ssgt on Friday, February 13, 2004 9:34 PM
I am ready to build the P-38 "YIPPEE", the all red 5000th Lightening, and I need to know what color red to use.

Anyone have an F/S number, or a good close match useing readily available model paint, without having to custom mix the color?

I've read where this color was referred to as:Vermillion, if that helps any.

Thanks, Leon.

I believe an old Wings or Airpower has a color shot of "YIPPEE". From what I remember it was a "rusty" red. I saw a P-38 painted up as "YIPPEE" back in 1968 but the paint was pretty faded and it appeared to be like the picture. This P-38 became "Scatterbrain Kid" and was fatally crashed in Oct of 1974 in Lafayette, La. I'll dig through my old Wings and Airpowers.

Ok, I found my Oct. 1977 Issue of Wings with "YIPPEE" on the cover and a color shot inside. The caption of a black and white shot says it was painted a "brilliant gloss crimson". Only other thing I could do would be to go to the nearest paint store and see how a color chip of crimson would compare to the photo. Send me an E-mail if you don't have any other leads!

In his book on the P-38, Jeff Ethell calls the color "a bright fire-engine red". The book has two color in-flight shots with Lockheed test pilot Milo Beacham in the cockpit. Hope this helps.
