F-16 decals for Vermont Air National Guard
Posted by VTmodeldude28 on Thursday, March 14, 2013 11:48 AM
Hello all,

The lady and I are headed up to Montreal in a few weeks, meaning lots of shoe stores for her and a trip to the excellent Udisco Ltd hobby shop for me!

I'm hoping to pick up Tamiya's recent 1/48 ANG Falcon to do up in Vermont Air National Guard markings. However, I'm finding it hard to track down a place to order the decals online. Can anyone help me out? Anyone done a VTANG bird?

On the bench:

1. Eduard 1/48 Mig-21 MF

2. Tamiya 1/35 M41 Walker Bulldog

3. Tamiya 1/35 T-72 M1

vtmodeldude28,

Let me know if you can't find any aftermarket stuff.  I retired from the VTANG and I remember we had some GE reps working there that got us some 1/48 desk models of the 16.  Someone on base had made custom VTANG decals for the desk models.  Most of my contacts there are on "vacation" right now, but I can check with them and see if they still have some of those decals sitting around.  Meanwhile I can check the box my desk model is in.  I might have gotten extra ones, but don't hold your breath!  Are you in VT?

Hi Eagle, that would be quite a find! Yes I am in VT and grew up listening to the Falcons so I thought it would be a good fit. Were you a pilot?

Hey vtmodeldude28,

No, I didn't break them (pilot), I fixed them(avionics troop)! Big Smile  I started off with (and it is my baby forever and ever!) the F-15.  I went to the yard dart when I went from active to full-time guard and finished my last 8 years in Burlington.  I have contacted my friends from there and as soon as they get back, they are going to check into seeing if they still have some laying around.  If anything, maybe we could get the format they used and print some ourselves!  I just checked the 16 I have in the box and it is the green "Vermont" band on the top part of the tail, along with the guard guy, the AF 84 294 number, and the "The Green Mountain Boys" logo, all for the tail.  I'll let you know as soon as I hear from my friends over there.  Until then, did you know there is a model show in Richmond, VT (CAN/AM CON 11) on 13 April?  Never been to a show before.  I'm hoping for lots of vendors!

First, to answer your question, I remember seeing some years ago.  A quick Google-fu search turned up some by a company called Afterburner decals, though their website is under construction, and I am not sure if these are still available.  Maybe evilbay?  Either way, here is a review of the decal set:

http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/decals/ab/decal_ab_48030.shtml

Now if you shall permit me to ramble a bit....I live in New Hampshire, and hike in the White Mountains a lot.  My friends and I are used to the F-15 jocks from the MA ANG zooming around there on training missions (and before them the A-10's.....god do I miss the A-10's Crying ), so color me surprised when one day one of my friends got a nice super zoom picture of one of the VT ANG's 16's.  Most cool!  But then again small things like that excite me.  I come from an Air Force (well, one AF, one Army Air Force) family.  My grandfather was a B-29 mechanic on Guam back in World War 2.  My Uncle was a Special Policeman stationed at Plattsburgh AFB back in the late 70's as an M-60 gunner on a nuke guard squad.  He still loves to complain about those sub-arctic nights standing next to the trusty FB-111A's (when the nukes were loaded on the airplanes they had to stand next to them, but when the nukes were in bunker storage they at least got to sit in semi-heated guard towers.....needless to say he liked guard tower duty better.)  Alas he was retired on disability when he blew out his knees jumping off the tailgate of a truck with a full gear load while on practice maneuvers.  Spent a year in military hospitals having multiple surgeries on both knees.  To this day he jokes about his government pension check for his 30% disability.....a whole $100 a month. Big Smile

Anyway, sorry for going off tangent.  This does make me think maybe of looking for those VTANG decals and building one myself, though I do have an Academy FB-111A kit I have been meaning to build for a few years now, but have been searching in vain to find a set of decals for Plattsburgh that is no loner made on evilbay.

Try 2 Bobs, they do decals for lots of National Guard units.

My favorite VT ANG moment growing up was parking at Tafts Corners in Williston and watching the Guard mock dogfight German Mig-29s over the shopping center!

I was at that show....won Best Vermont A/C with my Tamiya F-16C Blk 25 dressed up as Lethal Lady(1st F-16C to reach 7000hrs) Were you there?

There are a few ways to get VTANG decals for the F-16... A or C...Afterburner had 2 sheets, but they are long sold out. The Academy version of the C has Vermont decals in it, in fact I bought the kit just for the decals. ;) As someone else mentioned 2 Bobs makes a sheet with 2 Vermont jets on it...one being the 60th Anniversary scheme.

Hi Eagle90,

I'd like to build a 72nd scale Vermont ANG F-16 ADF.  Do you have any photos of what the jets looked like in 1992?

Thanks,

Rocky

Hey Rocky,

So sorry dude, I got there in 2001.  You can try the VTANG website, they may have some pics that would help you out.  Or try e-mailing the public relations office.  They may send you some pics!  I remember we retired the oldest flying F-16 in 2003?  Think it was 2003.  Tail number was 85-????.  Old plane in todays standards!  Sorry I didn't have any pics for you.  I do have a collectors book on the VTANG.  When my stuff is shipped down to Florida, I'll look through it and see if that has any pics for you.
