Disaster Strikes the Nerd
Posted by ModelNerd on Saturday, February 21, 2004 6:08 PM
Bad scene. My Hasegawa 1:48 P-51 project just ground to a halt. Today I went to apply my decals for my "Cripes Amighty 3rd" scheme, and due to the age of the kit, you probably guessed by now, the decals have dissolved in water!Dead [xx(]

So....

If anyone out there has the Hasegawa 1:48 kit, which comes with markings for Both Maj. George Preddy and Lt. Urban Drew, and has further decided to do up Lt. Drew's plane, thereby rendering the remaining Maj. Preddy markings unneeded and therefore sellable to the Nerd, PLEASE holler!

In the meantime, I will continue to check the aftermarket decal mfg's websites, but so far have markings only for Preddy's final plane (simply titled "Cripes Amighty", a "late" D), but apparently not for his "3rd".

It's a completely different logo, not to mention tail numbers, etc.

Not to hijack this post (sorry about your decals) but how old were the decals in question? Is there any way to protect old decals from destruction over time until we're ready to use them?

I put my decals in a three ring binder and in plastic pages. Some even go so far as to also include them in ziplock style bags inside the pages.

Hope that helps a little.

Sorry I do not have any P-51's at the present time. Good luck. See if someone might make a set for them. There are plenty of aftermarket decal manufacturers.,

Good Luck.

ModelNerd, I'll look around in my P-51 kits but I don't think that I have those markings. If I do i'll let you know. Sorry to hear that...

Hey Nerd, I have the kit sheet of whence you speak, shoot me an email with your mailing address and they're yours.

If these fail I do have a dupe of the TGR sheet with these markings, but transfer of ownership would involve some heavy-duty $$$! Tongue [:P]

Thanx a zillion, BlackWolf, as you likely know by now, I have e-mailed you my mailing address. One question remains, what is the "TGR" sheet which you speak of? I'm kinda bad with these acronyms.

Sorry, I take all that stuff for granted sometimes...

TGR is Three Guys Replicas. They made a couple of sheets covering most, if not all, of Preddy's mounts, including one aircraft flown by his brother Bill. Both of these sheets had been out of production and were going for astronomical amounts on evilBay.

Anyhoo, after getting your email I started to thinking; TGR is now affiliated with AMtech and their stuff is listed on AMtech's website. So I checked and came to find that both sheets are listed and there's nothing like "SOLD OUT" or "DISCONTINUED" anywhere near either of them. So they may be available again, I dunno. Here's the link to AMtech's website. Click on "Three Guys..." and then on "List All". They're the second and third sheets listed.

You're still welcome to the kit sheet I have, but you may want to look into finding out if the TGR sheet is still available (Tarheel Ace Part 1) because they're undoubtedly better quality than Hasegagme's.

As a matter of interest, here's the review for 'Tarheel Ace Part 1' from M2. (Modeling Madness.)

Lemmee know what you wanna do. As of now the kit decals are out the door on Monday...

OT Anybody have an idea as to the number of planes with Tarheel in the name. I've thought about painting a plane in black and white and putting Tarheel markings on it. My dominant tomcat, and thus most of the kittens within a mile's daddy) is named Tar Heel. TH is going on five this year AND whipped a coyote. If thay isn't the signs of the big man what is. It might be interesting. BTW He is the traditional tux pattern with the same black spot on his rt. heel as is father Tucker, hence Tar Heel in keeping with the T first name. His son is Tiberious and daughter Thea. The 4 are indistinguishable.
