FSM Aircraft ID Quiz #12
Posted by Quagmyre on Monday, February 23, 2004 4:36 PM
This Quiz is Closed! Scroll down to bottom of page for results. Thanks for playing!
Thanks to BlackWolf for letting me host one of these. Not sure I have come up with something as unique as a single somewhat obscure prototype, but here are somethings I stumbled upon the other day. I thought I'd go with a single aircraft, but I remember how fun the multiple aircraft ID quiz was from a while ago. So I went with BOTH! Some of you may get these right away. Figure everyone could use a confidence boost after the last quiz. And oh yes, being specific on the designations counts here for the multiple aircraft pic. A number of you will probably get the plane right in some cases, but have the wrong designation. As stated below in my respose to shrikes not looking for F-16C, just F-16 will do, but what is called an F-16 in ones backyard may not be in anothers. No partial credit in my class. Evil [}:)] Can't make this too easy. Wink [;)]

OK. I changed my mind. But 5/6 is B; 4/6 is a C. And anything less will constitute a parent/teacher conference. No, I will not be grading on a curve.Big Smile [:D]

Click on my email link below to submit your answers for Both Pic1 and Pic2.

Enjoy, and as usual...

NO POSTING GUESSES OR HINTS!...except for me. Big Smile [:D]

The pics aren't working and by the way you uncle would still be waiting on that 6 pack if 2000 weren't evenly divisable by 400.

If it were an F-16C the F-16 would be enough. But what is an F-16 in ones fleet may be called an *** in another's fleet. Wink [;)] Big hint. --- Darnit! I just broke my rule of not posting hints.Ashamed [*^_^*]

Keep at it. You've got an A so far. From your work on Pic 1.

But an A+ would look even nicer now on the refrigerator wouldn't it?Wink [;)]

Isn't that plane in pic 2 powered by 2 .049 Cox motors?

No prob, I like being able to take a rest once in awhile! Besides, whether I know what the answer is or not, I usually wind up looking around for additional info on the bird(s) in question. That's the real fun of this stuff for me. If only I could actually get paid to do this research thing, then I'd be in seventh heaven!

Anyone need a good researcher? Wink [;)]

Tough one! I'm not all that certain about the correct aircraft names, because the same planes often had different designations, depending on the user, like you said. And I can't even figure out the user of some of these aircraft! Well, gave it a shot. The second pic remains a big ? for me. Looks like a trial aircraft with fixed gear, but the cockpit has gone opaque, so it may have been sitting on that tarmac for quite some time. Old picture.... looks maybe something the Argentines or Japanese would have botched together....Basically: not a clue! Could even be a modelConfused [%-)].
Thanks for getting the old grey matter going!

Well, just think. Which "user" would most likely have all of these planes in its inventory.

Huge, huge, huge, hint for the designations. DOH! Disapprove [V] There I go again.

Expecting the worst, but hoping for the best as always. A true blue Cub fan. You can find me in Murchees Bleepher's (Murphy's Bleechers: Center field bar on Sheffield and Waveland across the street behind the bleechers at Wrigley) on any given weekend the Cubbies are in town.

It is in MLBs best interest that the Cubs and Red Sox meet in the World Series this year. The ratings plumeted when those two teams left the playoffs.

Oh. And Wood is what we got in Chicago! Big Smile [:D] At least this year. Sad [:(]

Iwould have liked to have seen the ratings if the twins had made it to the WS 2 years ago after they just about were contracted........

Alrighty, Quagmyre asked me to post the results of the quiz because he's having trouble logging onto the forums. So here we go...

There were 15 responses for the first photo. You had to ID all six aircraft.

9 got an 'A'. (6 out of 6)

The following is quoted from Quag's email:

QUOTE:
For Pic 1 - I was somewhat strict on this. I was looking for Navy designations because of the answer to this one question. What armed service would most likely have all of these planes in their inventory, and at one place where taking such a picture could occur? The Navy, of course. Many will be upset that I did not give them credit for just saying B-26 Marauder. If the said JM-1 or 2 and/or B-26 I gave them credit. Same thing happened often for the SNJ. Looking for SNJ, not T-6 Texan.

Top down.
1. North American SNJ
2. Grumman TBM/F Avenger <-- took any variant (i.e.,-1C, -3N, etc.). Too difficult to discern variant/version.
3. Grumman J2F Duck
4. Grumman JRF Goose
5. Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina
6. Martin JM-1 (or 2)

There were 5 responses to the second photo, with all five being correct.

Another quote from Quag:

QUOTE: For Pic2 - Go ahead and use your explanation below for the Interstate TDR-1 drone. Mine was similar, but yours, of course was more in depth.

Here's that bit:

QUOTE: Here's my answer for part two:

That's a TDR-1 assault drone, manufactured by Wurlitzer Company and assembled at Interstate Aircraft Plant, DeKalb Division.

This particular aircraft is in the training configuration with accomodation for a 'safety pilot' whose function was to recover the aircraft if control was lost by the DCP (Drone Controller Pilot) in the Avenger control plane. The 'safety pilot' was necessary because training flights were usually made on objects such as lighthouses and even ships of the fleet!

The only operational deployment of the aircraft was in Sept/Oct 1944 (AFTER the program had been cancelled); the unit involved being STAG ONE (Special Task Air Group One) which was composed of two squadrons, VK-11 & VK-12.) STAG ONE was the first of three planned groups to be formed by SATFOR (Special Air Task Force).

Anyhoo, instead of writing a book as I usually do, here's a link to a site about STAG ONE. Although I suspect that you already may know about this site...

STAG ONE

BTW, one TDR was borrowed by the USAAF for testing and designated BQ-4. Subsequent variants of the TDR were also eyed by the USAAF, with designations of BQ-5 & BQ-6 being allocated, but no further aircraft were procured.

And that's the end of Quiz #12. I'll post lucky #13 later on today/tonight...
