Anyone want to buy an R-2800???
Posted by Jeff Herne on Friday, February 27, 2004 11:48 AM
Since modelers are willing to buy Black Box cockpits off Ebay for $106, why not own a real piece of aviation history and put a REAL Pratt & Whitney R-2800-31 engine in the middle of your living room!! Oil stains on the carpet are guaranteed and are free, no extra charge!!!

You might think I'm joking...but I have a 1942 built R-2800-31that I'm looking to get rid of...

Anyone have a PV-2 they're restoring???

There's one catch, you have to come to New Jersey to pick it up, I'm not moving this heavy Censored [censored] any more.

Oh, I know, I was just being sarcastic. I really don't expect anyone here to want it.

It is a BIG engine though...

Jeff,

I wonder if the Mid Atlantic Air Museum would be interested. An R-2800 isn't on our wanted items list, but you never know. The guy I would have gotten you in contact with passed away rather suddenly late last year, but if you drop a note using this contact information -- http://www.maam.org/comm.html -- I bet you'll get a response one way or the other.

Contact me off-list if you want.

Regards,

-Drew

Hey Drew,

Russ Strine will get NOTHING from me...as far as I'm concerned, he's persona non grata.

I run the NJ State Aviation Museum...so we have a history...

Been there, done that. We brought one up from Tulsa last spring for a Beachcraft that lost an engine and landed at the airport. That was a mother to hoist and install without the right equipment. We used a forklift. Almost lost the prop off the trailer too. That would have been a costly accident.

I'll ask my wife????? Although she protested when I brought home an engine for my Honda Civic and left it in the back yard. Would make an interesting lawn ornament. The guy down the street has a boat anchor, I could have an airplane engine.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH?

HRRRRRMPH, More powerTongue [:P]

I like those ideas. But it's my wifes car, she got a little fidgiddy when I put the supercharger on it and the stinger muffler.

I bet IT would make a good leaf blower. We also have a C150 that needs and engine, wonder if our A&P will sign for itLaugh [(-D]
Jeff, your just going to have to build a 1:1 scale Corsair or Hellcat for IT and take it to the next Nationals.

Ah, Well. I had no idea. I knew you run a museum; didn't know that you and Russ don't get along.

Sorry about that.

Can I use it for a ceiling fan? My wife has already shot down the wall hanging and as an alternative power source for our Ford F-150.

This would make for one BIG coffee table. When you lay her on end, she's about 7 feet tall!!

Drew, no reason to apologize, you had no idea that NJAHOF and MAAM don't get along. I did know Pete well, and he is missed. Since you're local (at least for those of us who fly) chances are we'll hook up at one of these shows (PennCon) and I'll tell you the story over a beer.

If I bought it would I get access to the toys.......errrr.........planes in your museum? I would probably have to hock the house, truck and cats to afford it, but something like this would probably be worth the argument with my wife (honest honey, it followed me home, can I keep it?) I honestly would love having it in my shop. It would look good next to the F-105 parts I have.

I'm having a hard time just trying to find a place for my built models. I can't imagine what I'd do with that. Think it'll fit in a Toyota Supra? Big Smile [:D]

Y'know, the idiots across the street could use a good yard cleanup. I'd need a prop to go along with it for that, though...

I'd be a nice powerplant for my semi truck.

Jeff

What kind of paperwork do you have with the engine? (ie logs etc). Any idea of total time and time since overhaul? I know a fellow (worked for him for 12 years) who might be interested in it (last I knew he still had a couple of PV-2s and a PV-1).

Even if you don't have the paperwork, it still might be useful as a parts engine (the cylinders don't care if they are installed on a -31 or a -75 or any of the A-series engines)
Or as one of the guys suggested, donate it to a museum as a display (and get a nice tax right off in the process)

Hey Quincy,

I AM a museum...this is an artifact from my collection that has been approved for deaccession.

I was told that it received an overhaul in 1944, and I pulled it out of the steel can it's been in since that time...

Get in touch with your PV-2 guy and see if he's interested in it. I'd like a C&W engine in swap, doesn't need to be a runner, a metal-making motor is fine. R-3350, 3350TC, 1820, or J-series powerplants would be nice.

The reasoning: I am the Director of the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum. Curtiss Wright (Wright Aeronautical Corp.) had six engine facilities in New Jersey during the war, producing some 625,000 engines for the war effort. So, I collect CW engines. Pratts are nice, but they don't fit into my mission statement.

Jeff,

That sounds really good. I worked with Pete to put our newsletter on the web. I didn't know him well, but we talked or corresponded every couple of months for two or three years. You're right, he is missed.

Littlemoe, on this board (Ron Mlodzienski) has said he'll be at PennCon (which is 15 minutes away from my house). I'd love to meet you there too. This'll be my first model show, and my wife will be coming along. I'll be glad to buy a beer for you . . . in exchange for the story. Wink [;)]

You can always ask some professional tractor pullers. They use big radials all the time!
