Revell Strike Eagle
Posted by Tarasdad on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 8:09 PM

Well, after a few weeks of short sessions I finally have my 1/48 Revell Strike Eagle ready for the airbrush. Time to lay down the Gunship Gray! After that it'll be detail painting and decals. I expect the decals to take me another couple of weeks just from the sheer number that are on this thing! Landing gear, fuel tanks and such will be the last things.

One thing I did find out while building this kit that has left me both happy and amazed - my 20 year old Model Masters paints still work just fine! I'm especially thrilled that all those jars of Metallizers that I bought but never used are still in perfect shape! They were originally bought for a Monogram B-29 and Italeri C-119 Boxcar. Both of those were in-progress kits that I had to leave behind when I moved from Texas to Utah in 1999.

I'll try to get some good pics and post them when it's done.

Lookin' forward to seeing it!

As far as Model Master, I have old bottles that are in good shape, and the newer stuff drying out way too soon.

Question: Would it be better to spray the Gunship Gray first then mask and apply the Metalizer Titanium? Or should I apply the titanium first then mask it and apply the gray?

Hello!

I don't know the Model Master metalizers too good, but some metalizers don't take masking too good, so that would dictate putting gray on first and then metalizers on top. But it's woth a try on a scrap piece of plastic, to make sure the paints don't conflict, because I heard there's the possibility. Normally metalizers cover pretty well, so the coverage shouldn't be an issue. In any case I'd recommend an experiment first to save the model from any problems. Hope it helps, good luck with your project and have a nice day

I've had good luck with the MM metalizers, but they can be delicate. I'd say Gunship first and then spray your Metalizers. But they are lacquer based, so ideally you don't put them over the top of enamel or acrylics.

I've had good luck with the Alclad primers(lacquer based) as a base under acrylic, enamel and lacquers.

Good Modeling,

The metalizers don't play well with masking tape.  If you can I'd paint the gunship grey first then apply the metalizer.

Also, try to get the area where the metalizer will go as smooth as possible.  I'd suggest masking the area and then buffing it out with a cotton cloth or some high grit sanding medium...like 4000 or higher.  Or you could brush some Future onto the surface that will receive the metalizer.

I may hold the metalizer until after decals and dullcote. That way it would be lacquer on lacquer.

Still haven't been able to put any paint down. I have to do airbrushing in the garage and it's been just too darned hot to set up out there, or if it isn't I just haven't been feeling well enough to do it! Darn it, I want to see this one finished! I'd have done it today but had a suspicious growth cut off my face today, pain meds for that have me less than 100% functional.

Grr.
