Here is the next project!
Building, Correcting and Updating the 1/72 Heller EC-121 Warning Star to a 551st AEW&Con Wing EC-121H.
My Dad was assigned to the 551st from 1966 to 1968. Like my previous C-130H project, this was something I have wanted to do as a companion to my E-8C. Dad and I were both on special electronic aircraft torward the end of our AF careers. My Dad wasn't particularly fond of the 551st, but I remember him talking about "those EC-121's".
To build Heller's Connie accurately, your going to need a lot of aftermarket. Fisher Models produces an EXCELLENT correction set for the Heller kit.
Here's where is all begins:
Nose Correction
Tip Tanks
Radome Set which includes the SAGE/ALRI radome...a must for building an H model aircraft
Comparison with the kit parts - The white parts are the kit parts. The kit parts are the wrong shape for the belly radome and too thin for the upper radome.
Engines and cowlings
Comparison with kit parts - Heller missed the mark with these.
Removing the kit tip tanks
Fisher Tank - Top
Kit Tank - Bottom
Removing the incorrect Heller nose
Test fit of flight deck
New Nose Test Fit 1
New Nose Top
New Nose windscreen test fit
Flight Deck work...
With the Fisher Models nose dry fitted
Windscreen test fit...not a lot visible...
After stressing on where and how to exactly place the square sleeve in the fuselage, I think I hit it spot on.
The patches you see on the base are the real deal from the 1960's.
