"Raspberry Ripple" DAKOTA (DC-3/C-47)
Posted by gregbale on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 12:01 PM

Greetings to all!

Down (but not completely out) with ongoing computer problems, I nonetheless offer my latest project, Minicraft's diminutive 1/144 DC-3, done up as a Dakota C.3 in the eye-catching markings of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, circa 1984.

Kit was built stock, with the addition of numerous aerials, beacons and whatnot. Paints are a combination of Tamiya and MM acrylics, coated with Future. Decals are home-made and inkjet-printed (quite a while back), except for the white serial under the port wing (which are not-quite-accurate style-wise, but the only ones I had that were the right size), from an old Scalemaster US Navy set.

One of the prettier of the modern DC-3 schemes. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Very nice! I used to see DC-3's flying over my house regularly when I was a kid (Cape Air flew them back in the 70's out of New Bedford, MA).  The last ones were retired in the mid 80's, I miss seeing them & hearing those radials.

Wow, that's gorgeous! I can't believe you did such intricate masking in 1/144th!

Beautiful job, especially considering it is 1/144.

I just don't understand how you were able to get the decals and paint to look so good on a scale this size. Great job!

The DC-3 was the first plane I flew in. I was about 8 years old (1951) when my father (who had flown JN-4's in Pensacola Fla. during WWI) took my brother and I home from summer camp near Keene, New Hampshire to La Guardia Airport in Queens, NY. I remember my brother and I were allowed in the cockpit for a few minutes to see what was going on. Great experience!

I sure hope I can develop more competency with regard to painting and decals on the aircraft stash I have. I'm currently working on what I've read is an easy build and am having enough trouble with it attempting to get the decals to sit correctly even with micoset and microsol. The plane I'm working on (my first since about 1957 Smile) is the AM 1.48 Grumman F3F-1. I don't want to throw it in the trash yet since I'm learning from the experience but it's sure not something I'll hang from the ceiling of my "hobby room" Embarrassed.

Again, your model is inspirational to me as are so many of the finished and WIP kits I see on this site.

Thanks for posting.

Mike

Many thanks to all for your kind words!

For all its snappy appearance, the masking wasn't all that complicated, since it was (mercifully) mostly straight lines. Just a bit of patience, several different widths of Tamiya tape, and---a necessity, these days, with advancing years and marginally declining eyesight---my Optivisor knockoff from the local discount tool store.

These Minicraft 1/144 DC-3s [I have yet to try the newer Roden releases, which I'm told are much better replicas] are one of my favorite choices for between-major-project builds. They're relatively quick and easy to knock out, and I have an inspiring backlog of decals for various schemes, both military and civilian (and I seem to be adding new ones regularly). They're fun and rewarding without a lot of modeling angst involved.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
