Working with Vinyl Tires and Metal Hubs
Posted by JIM77 on Friday, June 13, 2014 1:30 PM

I'm getting ready to start on Hasegawa's F-14A/B (kit 09502).  The vinyl (or rubber) tires are the only tires included in the kit (no styrene tires) with white metal hubs.  The directions say to use CA glue, but are there any other precautions I need to be aware of?

The black is quite stark, so I'll need to paint them.  Any tips here?

I may just go with an aftermarket resin set from Eduard if anyone can recommend a good set.

Thanks.

I have a Fujimi kit with wheels like that, but I could not find any AM wheels, though that is 72nd, not sure what scale your kit is.

I am not sure you would need to glue the tires onto the hubs, but you would need CA to glue the wheels to the legs. I used some vinyl tires on a big 88 Flak gun recently and just dry brushed them with oil paints a\nd I was rather pleased with the results.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Most important warning I can make is not to try and paint them.  Many of us like to paint tires molded deep black with a more weathered black.  But painting vinyl is very tricky.  Few paints play well with vinyl. Figure painters seem to have techniques, but I sure do not know what to use on vinyl.  I have heard people say, "prime it first," but every primer I have tried makes it gooey.  I have tried various acrylics- they make it gooey.

I would not try to paint vinyl tyres.  You can achieve a much better look for them by simply using sandpaper on them to take away the black sheen.  You will end up with a dark grey which in my opinion looks much better.  I would not try and glue them onto metal wheels either.  The tyres should simply pop on to the wheels and sit there.  HTH.

try watercolors for weathering vinyl, worst case is it doesn't work and you can wash it off

I've never had to glue rubber tires to wheels.  The fit is usually tight enough that they will stay put.

Talcum powder is okay for making vinyl tires less "black."  It comes in "skin tone" shades that give a good dusty appearance.
