Airfix 1/24 Typhoon
Posted by snapdragonxxx on Thursday, July 3, 2014 12:26 PM
Hi Chaps, This bird is about to be released, unless they've put this back again. Should have been 6th June, but for some reason they put it back to July. Anyone on here shelling out for this beast? I am! James

Hello James, I'm waiting for the U.S. release date for pre-order, I hear Kinetic is putting out a P-47 in 1/24th scale also, but the only item I've heard on that is, it's the old Vintage fighters kit re-boxed. I do want the "Tiffy'  also. My friends in the U.K. who have seen it say it is a beaut. - Bob

The booklet that came with last month's Airfix magazine sure makes it tempting!

I agree!!

I am quite neutral about the Typhoon, don't love it, don't hate it - but this new Airfix kit makes it look unreal!

Any ideas on pricing yet?

My next "big" kit is going to be either the Tamiya 1/32 Corsair, the Revell 1/32 Heinkel He 111, or the 1/24 Typhoon. I figure it'll be out by the time I finally make my mind up.

I have one on order, cml look for it being around the £90 -£100 so maybe $150. I saw the test kit at Telford last year and it looks great, the Airfix guys where not happy that I suggested they had been "influenced" by Zoukei Mura

It could be tempting to get two after seeing what the 1/24 Mosquito is going for now

I just looked at the price of their 1/24 Mossi -- what the heck.  Was it a limited-run kit or something??

Not limited but I think they are hiding the molds for a while and I'm pretty sure the same will happen with the Typhoon

So Airfix made X amount  then go on a hiatus with the Mosquito?

Yes that's pretty much it from what I've heard and what I expect will happen with the Typhoon. They may be making other versions so the molds will get pulled out for them but that may be a way off.

On the subject of Airfix and their molds I'm reliably informed that they have all but a couple of their molds all the way back to the 60's just don't bring them out very often which is a shame as I'm sure there are some classic ones we would all like to see dusted off and reused

Ok chaps, Here's the Gen.....

I have the 1/24 Tiffie in my hot, sweaty and mucky paws. I will post a review on here in the next couple of days, so hang tight as I need to finish off my 1/35 Italeri Vosper MTB. Don't Panic as I only have some rigging to do and shouldn't take long.

I am unable to help with a US release date, but I do know already that here in the UK the Typhoon is already in short supply and it has only just been released! Very popular and so I will be getting another one to go in the stash.

The official RRP here in the UK is £99.99. Before you suck your teeth search around to finds discounted kits. I can vouch for a very large box stuffed full of plastic. It is obvious when you inspect what is on the sprues (and I have only had a very brief look ATM) that provision has already been made for the earlier car door version. If sales warrant it, and I have no doubt that, despite the RRP, sales will be good, then the Car door version will be done. Also I think that the kit also lends itself to the Tempest variants too.

On to the Mossie.

I think that Airfix are waiting another couple of years before putting the mossie out again so that interest will be high. Also they will probably do a bomber variant too, or sprues to make a bomber variant out of the original FB VI.

I missed the Mossie. Can't find it anywhere and also any that appear on Ebay go for stupid prices.

Best thing to do to get the Mossie back in the catalogue is to go to Airfix's FB page and have a good moan at them for taking it out of the catalogue!

Going back to the Tiffy. Having seen the original test shots and build at Telford last year and now having the finished result here in my hands and just the briefest of glimses at the moment, This, and the Mossie are the best kits yet from Airfix and money well spent even at RRP prices.

The Tiffy Kit is one that those shelling out for it will not be disappointed with at all. There will be some stunning builds done!

Look out for my Review and pics very, very soon!

I got mine today as well. I had a look at the instructions and was surprised to see you build up the engine, fuselage interior and wings before you put the outer fuselage on which looks strange if nothing else.

It looks like a great kit and I still say it owes at least a debt to Zoukei Mura. I'm a little surprised there is no metal landing gear as its a big kit and with the way they want the gear made I cant say it will stand up to a lot of landings!

I think the vast majority will be built with the invasion stripes( mine will probably get built with them too) but there is an option for blue and white checked fuselage band which I think would look good but I don't think I have the room or can justify the cost to do that

Just looked at my canopy, check yours as it looks like there is a flaw in mine and another I've just seen online has the same issue. Hopefully yours is fine

Would it be, by per chance a very tiny crack where the bubble hood joins the sprue?

If so, mine has that, but it's very minor and although that sprue is very well protected the fault has occurred because the part is not fixed in two places to the sprue. It has happened because of that and the stresses of being bounced around In the box. I will get the macro lens out and carefully photograph this for the review.

Thanks for pointing it out. It won't have much impact on the build as I don't do competitions, but it is something to note and inform airfix.

can you post a link to where you saw it?

James

Sorry to say no its not a stress facture but its within the canopy itself about 2/3 of the way back on the upper surface. It looks like its where the spastic cured causing almost a lens within the part.

You can see it in this video review

I see where you mean. Mine too has the same. You only really see it if you are purposefully looking for it.

Also you should notice that there is NO SEAM LINE down the middle of the canopy!

Outstanding Airfix!

Thanks Phil.

Don't know what you think, but for me this is the best Airfix kit ever. Contender for kit of the year too!

mmmm not sure I think the Mossie may have it for me. If you want 100% picky I think the cannons could have been better as they look a little soft to me and some of the rivets are a little soft too but that's being hyper critical

Contender for kit of the year is possible as I've seen the ZM HO229 and cant say I'm 100% happy about the skin being clear on that

I have heard quite a few people say they're not happy with the clear skin for the HO229. Maybe they will change their minds once they have the kit and get to grips with it.

ZM are always ready to listen to their customers (or "Fans") and try something new. Maybe in the finished kits they will include normal coloured plastic skin as well as the clear one. Me? I would have suggested the plastic skin as an extra option to go along with the etched and metal extras.

I will be ordering 3 of those Hortens for Telford if they will let me do so. I will also re-order the Raiden as I totally destroyed the plastic undercart and where it fits trying to get them in place! Next time there will be a metal set and I will think carefully about how and WHEN to put them in!

With this Tiffy you are going to have to really nit pick to get something negative! I already have Masters 1/24 Hispano barrels for this. If they fit the Mossie, they WILL fit this Tiffy beastie!

THe engine though is a kit in itself!!!

It took me a full afternoon to photograph the kit. I will post a review as soon as I have recovered my eyesight from the bright flash used at times!

Picked up my Typhoon this weekend, What a beauty! $119.99 Nice price for the massive amount of detail. Still slight problem with canopy and WRONG Gunsight. But for the price, I can pick up those pieces, the cannons and still have a deal.
