Indoor Un-restored Museum Warbirds?
Posted by dmk on Sunday, July 6, 2014 9:26 AM

One of my favorite museum aircraft is the P-38J on display at the National Air & Space Museums's Udvar Hazy center. I don't know much about the history of this aircraft, but it appears to be in original un-restored condition. Well used, weathered and beautiful.

Do any of you know of any other original condition weathered warbirds on indoor display?

** I don't mean the one's that are outdoors and have just faded while on display due to neglect. **

It's a relatively new trend for museums. Udvar-Havy's P-61 and Space Shuttle are also un-restored. The P-38 was a Wright Field test aircraft that *** Bong had time in.

Theres a P-40 in Canada that's the exact same today as it was when it was sold surplus in 1945. A the National Museum of Naval Aviation there are some displays of aircraft "as found", mostly training aircraft that were recovered from the Great Lakes

Thanks for these!  These photos go to show that rivets are pretty visible on weathered aircraft...  this is pretty illuminating for working on weathering technique.  Cheers!

As an aside, I can't recommend the Udvar Hazy center highly enough.  If you are in DC, it is VERY worth the trip out to see it.

Great album, Dave, especially given the difficult shooting conditions.

Those aren't my pictures, I was just using them as an example to show what I meant.

I agree though Udvar-Hazy is awesome. I like it much better than the museum on the mall in DC.

I'll need to look for pictures from the Naval Aviation Museum in FL. I'd like to go there too one day.
