BlackSheep, there were a couple ofl helicopter types that were in use during the war. The Germans were using the fa 223.

The American R-4 conducted the first recue in a combat zone by a helicopter in 1944. I think there may have been a couple of others.

Actually, in the Nazi's plan to free Mussolini from Gran Sasso in Sept. '43, a helicopter (Fa 223) was originally supposed to be the escape vehicle. But it broke down on the way, so they sent a Fi 156 Storch instead.
