I've been managing to do a little bit without an air compressor. I used a brush to paint the B-17s. I didn't think they would look very good. but they turned out looking pretty good. I'll get some pics in a day or so and post them

I remember reading an article/story/book about one 17 that made it back on an engine and 1/3to 1/2.  Just made it over the coast line and to a base.  Wonder if it was the same one.....

So far I got the halves together, seams sealed up. I am currently re-scribbing the entire kit. It's a good thing it has no complicated panel lines, still though it is a chore. But in the end I think it will be worth it !

While there's not a lot of headway going on, I do like what I'm seeing!  By the way, wpjets, for your first model you're doing a pretty good job!!!  Looks like you're using an air brush?  I started out hand painting everything, then went to using an air brush and I'll never go back... That said, there's a few guys on here that do hand paint everything that are awesome!

B one Fixer, all I can say is wow.  I love the detail, especially on the floor.

I'm thinking about jumping in.  My local Hastings has Revell's G model and I'm thinking about doing it OOB.  The uncle of my best friends wife flew 50 missions in a 17 in the E.T. and I was wanting to do his bird for his son.  But apparently the book he had has done a Judge Crater and disappeared.  I'm still hoping he'll find it.  Guy ended up going the entire war without so much as a scratch.  Was awarded the DSM for bringing his bird in on one engine after getting shot up.  He ended up getting sick towards the end of his first tour and got grounded.  Another pilot took his plane up and he never saw it or his crew again.  That scar he carried with him for life...  Great men...

Thanks for the info on the extinguisher color!  I said they were silver in my post and I can see now that I was wrong.  I knew they weren't red though so I'm glad someone corrected my "info" above.  I'm pretty sure in my last B-17, I painted them red.  I have one more in my stash and I'll be sure to paint them the correct brass or bronze color when the time comes.

Eric

Your Welcome. Now that this info has come to light, I remember seeing the brass colored ones when i was a kid

One thing is that WW2 fire extinguishers were not red, they were brass or bronze.  It is just like the emergency crowbars for Spitfires which were natural steel, and then painted red after the war.

Yes, I found alot of pics on Google of them. So, I repainted all of the ones on the B17s. I used Brass colored paint. it seemed to work. if anyone has a better color, let us all know.

I found a box from Revell between my doors when i went to go out today. Soooo, This means I am able to move forward on the 17's I've been painting to night for about 4 hours. Yea, I know, it's morning now. LOL

I also picked up a really nice set of brushes today at my LHS. I'm told they don't come any smaller. I used one on the Tires/Wheels. I'm not bragging. That isn't me, but I think I must be getting better at painting these little pieces. I couldn't make them look this good a year ago. It is nice to see it all come together like this. I will never think of myself as an expert, just a regular guy having some fun.

Hi all,

There hasn't been much headway on the B 17s here. I am waiting for replacement parts from Revell. I just received an email saying they have been shipped this morning, So, I think i'll have them in a few days.

Wpgjets,

It's definitely looking good!  I'd love to participate in the group build but I'm already working on two other kits for the Monogram group build.  At the rate which I complete models, those two planes will keep me busy enough.

I've got the visible B-17 in my stash along with a fair amount of aftermarket resin to go along with it.  Normally I never touch resin but I thought it might be a fun little exercise to give it a try.  At the best, it'll turn out looking great.  At the worst, it'll be a reminder as to why I don't deal much with resin at all.

A couple of things I'd like to bring up.  One is that, from what I've been reading recently, the fire extinguishers you see in the kit's nose section should be painted silver.  Again, from what I've read and have not yet verified myself, fire extinguishers during the war years were silver.  The red color wasn't used until much later.  I hope someone can chime in and shed some light on this.

The other thing I was thinking is that the interior of the B-17 was, indeed, painted but the bomb bay area was not.  It was left silver.  I'm not sure if it was unpainted or if it was coated with some sort of anti-corrosion paint.  Again, I'm hoping someone far more knowledgeable can offer some more insight into the matter.

Hope that helps!

Eric

Hmmm, I think I'm in for some research. From the pictures I found there are/were diifferent colors, a few silver, some brass colored and sort of a reddish colors. This a link to google images on the subject.

I'm not sure what you mean by fall inside the wings? The engines attach to a peg that's backed by solid plastic (or at least they did in my kit!!) :)

Sorry about that WPG I was thinking about the B 24 D I'm biuilding now too. I think I'm going to tape it behind or inside the wings.

B. quote - Got  a little bit done on the interior. Its a shame it will all vanish once the halves are closed up.

It may be closed up, but we will know it is correct on the inside. you can always put some lights in it.Some day, I will gert around to doing that.

I was thinking maybe you were going to do a "What If" build and make the 17 with counter-rotating props!

Looking good so far!

That's a pretty sharp looking build you got going

I totally agree

How did you keep the engines from popping lose and falling inside the wings?

I finally started on this kit a couple weeks ago. I apologize if it looks amateurish (it is my first model) but here are some progress pictures. Please let me know what I could do better next time.

Thanks green. Revell is pretty good at sending additional parts if requested again. I put in an order for parts from numerous kits without issue.

Well I went ahead and started this kit. I did not realize how much detail this kit offers.

Mine had some broken props and the decal sheet was pretty yellow, Revell was nice enough to send me some replacements.
