Top Gun F-14 squadron question....
Posted by ENS. "Bones" on Monday, July 28, 2014 5:35 PM
In the movie, the opening scene where Cougar and Maverick are out, what squadron planes are they in?

I know there are several diffirent squad planes during the movie including VF-1, but the one im looking for is from scene above. (It has a circle tail badge but cant make it out...)

A little help here guys.

Thanks!!

It's not a real Tomcat squadron. The patch is from a (I think) an E-2C squadron.

The two "Top Gun" marked aircraft in the movie are a fictional VF-1 badge that looks sort of like an eagle streaking towards the ground, with "VF-1" in the curved band below it.

And the other aircraft has a fictional VFA-213 script underneath the "fighting fist holding a thunderbolt" of VA-25 "Fist of the Fleet"

the actual aircraft were provided while VF-111 Sundowners were shorebound (but, only the two above were painted up for the movie)

This info is covered in the Testors 1/72 Top Gun Tomcat release, and Colors & Markings Volume 8 on Pacific coast Tomcat squadrons.

Well, damn TarnShip!!  You know just about every damned thing huh! =]  That's why I love this forum.  I have often wondered the same thing, just didn't think to ask.

VF-51 also gave a couple jets for the filming. It's fun to watch all the different jets that Maverick flies in. If you watch carefully, they change quite a few times.

There is a shot of several VF-1 Tomcats at Miramar during one of the early morning take off sequences. And IIRC you see a VF-114 Tomcat during the opening of the film flight deck sequence onboard the Big E. I still prefer "The Final Countdown" for it's eye candy though... All those gorgeous late 70s full color schemes plus a few newly introduced "low viz" schemes.

My favorite exchange in The Final Countdown:

"What if I go back in time and meet my grandfather, long before he has kids. We get into an argument and I kill him. How will I ever be born? And if I'm never born, how can I go back in time to meet my grandfather?"

Try and wrap your brain around that one! LOL!

Yes, I loved some of the dialog in that part of the movie. It was intelligently done with some tongue in cheek humor thrown in there along the way.

".... We are in a WAR situation.... This is a United States WAR ship... Or used to be... Or will be... Or what the **!! ever! ... Jesus I must be dreaming!"

Splash one zero, splash two, AWESOME MOVIE!  as for Top Gun, many different squadrons but definatly Hollywood as for the names. I was privelaged enough to serve with VAQ-131  aboard the Ranger a couple years after the movie came out, VF-1 and VF-2 were our fighter support, both played supporting roles in the movie.
