The Ugliest aircraft ever boxed...
Posted by DanCooper on Tuesday, March 2, 2004 7:04 PM
I just went true the line of worst kits..... and kits that are never gonna be finished.
They say you can't argue about taste or color, but in aerial history some stange birds have seen the light of day.

So I was wondering about the taste of the modeler......please let me know what airplane (or helicopter) you personnally think is the ugliest bird.

Personally I find the "Electric Lightning" absolutely the ugliest machine ever built.

How about you ???

Well Dan, I do'nt know if the "ELECTRA" can even come close to the 1/48th (approximate scale) Mig from AURORA in the mid 1950's.

What really gets me is that so many people find the E. E. Lightning beautiful!

Everything just seems wrong about that poor plane!

Well I am not sure if I am ready to cast my vote for the Electric Lightning, but I must admit when viewed from certain angles, it certainly looks like pieces are missing. I do not know if a delta wing would have made it look more complete or not..

Chas, at first I thought you were talking about a Lockhead Electra, which was a rather pretty looking aircraft for it's time.

I'm with seevee on the Amiot 143.

That is one wilfully ugly machine!

Can't see how you can say the Lighnting is ugly though.

Having said that I'm not a big fan of Corsairs, but I wouln't go as far as t say they were ugly.

LIGHTNING????
are you mad?
Maybee the F22, but you have obviously never seen a pair of F6's do a formation, near vertical take off!
The english electric lightning crushed all other interceptors of its era and lasted into the late 80's - it was a fantastic aircraft and it looked like a real fighter.

Seevee, That Transavia Airtuck is indeed out of this world... Did you ever see it in the Mad Max 3 movie? I scratchbuilt that airplane in 1/48 with only the movie as a reference... That was in '88, when my club was doing an Australia theme to its annual exhib.

The F-22 used to be the most horribly DULL and UNINTERESTING aircraft around, but now that the F-35 is going into production I guess the title has been taken.

I also think that the E.E. Lightning is the ugliest kit in a box. Regardless of whatever the real aircraft is capable of doing, I can't escape the fact that its visually unappealing. Hey ! let's be different ! put the engines on top of each other, and put the drop tanks on top of the wing ! Brilliant !

Exactly right Pixilator, just what I was thinking, I didn't say anything about it's performance, I was just looking for the ugliest thing... so Oggy, I'm affraid your remark was a bit besides the question.

I think that some a/c are so ugly that they're endearing... case in point: the A-10. I love how it looks but from an aircraft standpoint it's pretty ugly. I think the Lightening is like that... some people like it for its quirks. When it come to the F-4 it's not the prettiest most graceful looking bird... but it's up there with my favorites. That's also true of the SR-71 family... kind of strange looking but really cool and another of my favorites. I guess my point is just that sometimes it's in the eye of the beholder, and one person's opinion may not be anothers. That being said... I would have to vote for the B-18 as well... and of coarse that airtruk is horrid looking. Has anyone ever seen some of the old Grumman agricultural a/c... they're just ugly. (Not in kit form as far as I know though.)

Hey seevee-I've got a Goblin on deck (along with 80 other kits). A face only a modeler could love!

My vote is for the F-4 Phanthom II, any version. Big, brutal, unashamedly and purposefully UGLY. Hang tanks and ordnance on it and it only gets uglier.
For more than 20 years it made a living scaring the crap out of its adversaries.
And ... we need more planes like the Phanthom that perform the function of big, brutal and purposeful, whether they be ugly or beautiful.
LONG LIVE the RHINO!!!

Hey M1A! The Blohm and Voss 141 was a wonderful plane-too bad they forgot the other half of it.

My vote goes to the F-22. Maybe even the YF-23. I don' t think any airplane is ugly, some weird maybe, but I just love planes too much to think one is ugly. I just think that the F-22 is a little...plain

I always thought the E.E. Lightning looked like a middle-aged MiG-21 with a paunch...

And if you want ugly, the F-117 looks like it was built out of Lego, and the B-2 looks like a giant boomerang with a face.

The F-22 is really plain, I agree with everyone on that point. It looks pretty sleek, but I couldn't figure out where they stashed all of the missiles...and then I saw some test footage of it launching 'em....I was shocked!!! Imagine building that baby with all of the missile bays open!!! That my friends will be a beautifully detailed kit, when someone builds it!!! But my pick is the Guppy. Damn that thing is ugly!!!!

I agree with Pix on the E.E. Lightning, but i still think it's rather pretty to look at. and i'm sure that most of you will forget how ugly it is when you guys go here.

The F-22 does look boring and plain, but i'll have to disagree about the YF-23. That was a rather interesting plane. it looked like someone took a sledgehammer to an F-15 and flattened it out! Even the goblin is kind of interesting, in the same way that you have to take a glance at a wreck on the interstate...

My vote for the uglyest plane ever boxed: I think i'll have to agree with Redknight on this one and go with the F-117. Smile [:)]
Blackadder: This plan's as cunning as a fox that used to be Professor of cunning at Oxford University but has now moved on and is working with the U.N at the high commission of cunning planning

I don't think it's ever been kitted, but in the rotary world, the ugliest has to be the Mojave, what were they thinking?

My dad gave me an AMT 1/72 F-117 that was horrible. It was a lot closer to 1/48, and had only about 8 pieces.

BTW great to see you back Akuma... missed you around here.

English Electric Fright'ningLY UGLY and rather bloated. That one ag. cropduster thats replacing the Avengers in Canada, and the Hawker target towers (not the Hurricane after the war- beautiful). The B-32 looked a bit weird to me. That and the F-117.
