Being as how Phantoms replaced Lightnings in a lot of RAF units, the comparison is almost not required.

I love em' both by the way :-)

I like the F-4 Phantom, but would need some comparison pics side by side to fully decide.

I will put this plan and simple, there never has been, nor will there ever be a nicer looking airplane than the F-4 Phantom II. That is strictly my opionion. Period.
Phantoms rule the skies!!!

I'm partial to the Phanthom for "it's" era. The F-86 is my favorite of the early jets.

Clear Left!

I agree with Jim...the only aircraft that comes close to the F-4 is the Su-27...

But, since the old man flew RF-4C in the 'Nam, I am partial to them.

would you like to put this in the proper perspective,
the Lightning was a INTERCEPTOR, the lightning would be at 50,000ft whilst the phantom jock was still waiting for the back seater to strap in, as for range, both were inflight refuelable, so do's not count, lightning aws designed with a gun, not so the phantom.
the lightning was and alway will be the best in service rapid responce interceptor. (even outclimbs the f15).
and it looks sexier

Nah, the only thing that comes close is the MiG-21PFMTongue [:P]
I will admit that the Su is a sexier ship though

A friend's father was a fighter pilot in the RCAF in the 50's and 60's. He had the opportunity to fly both aircraft and he stated that he preferred the Lightning. We didn't go into a whole lot of discussion about it but he stated the Lightning flew and handled better. But as was stated by sagindragin, both were designed for different roles. One thing Don did say was that Lightning pilots couldn't be very tall or have very long legs. The way the Lightning cockpit was designed was that the pilot sat very close to the instrument panel. If a pilot had to eject, the one with longer legs suffered a greater chance of having his legs / knees broken by the instrument panel as he was leaving the aircraft.

As an aside, Don was also selected to fly in the Arrow program but a few days before he was set to go his orders changed and he was sent out to Cold Lake to do weapons instruction. He was non-plussed by that decision.

Which is why I suppose everyone else is flying the F-16, F-15, Su-29, Mig 29, and the Mirage....so they wouldn't have to worry about the drooling, eh??

Just stirring the pot!!

Hey, the Phantom was originally designed as a NAVAL INTERCEPTOR. The Lightning wasn't designed for carrier operation. (Didn't have the balls to do it, but OOPS I'm supposed to stay impartial!!!)
