Warning "Do not purchase Photoflex"
Posted by Toshi on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 1:26 PM

To my fellow forum members,

As you are all aware, I am a returing scale model aircraft builder/fan after a 40 year haitus.  I recently have found out what PE "Photo Etching" was all about.  Wow, what incredible detail and oh boy, such small pieces!  Well like all things in any hobby, it's all about the right tools for the right job.  I researched photo etch bending tools with my daughter via you tube.  The most efficient and as well as the cool factor was a tool by Photographix called Photoflex.  Yes, the cool factor would be a great explanation for the Photoflex.  That is until I finally received this cool factor tool.  While watching on You Tube the step by step procedure in assembling the Photoflex, the tabs literally fell off.  This made my brand new unused Photoflex a stainless steel piece of rubbish.

I contacted the sellar of which whom would give me back my refund of approximately $35.00 and some change.  As my father use to say; "You pay for what you get"!  So I immediately and very diligently purchased the more traditional 4" photo etch bending tool; the type with the two screw down.  Currently, I'm awaiting it's delivery.  Once in my hands, I'll update forum members of this specialty tool.

thank you for your paytience,

Toshi

Are you sure it's not the Photo Etched material that is too brittle instead of the tool?

I have both and use the tool for somethings, but the two blade trick is good too.

Not heard of the Photoflex. I did buy an etch mate 3C a few years back and have hardly used it. I still find smooth flat nosed pliers the best tool for bending PE.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

It's the tool that has a major issue.

I watched You Tube on the long nose plier bending technique, I see why Tamia only offers the plier type photo etch bending tool.

Yes, they are pricey!  The best (Cost wise) tool I found is a 4" bending tool for $51.00.

I don't have the technique to do so, but I assume in time I can practice this process, until that time comes, I've found a 4" bending tool (With the two screw downs) of which I purchsed via eBay for $51.00

I'd be curious to see this tool you are talking about.

The closest hit I've found during any searches is your own post. Smile   Have a link to that uTube video, by chance?

I have learned to stop spending money on photo etch tools and use the cash for booze to deal with the after-effects of the photo etch.

I usually end up not using most of the PE parts, because you can't see most of them when the build is finished,  and the ones you might see disappear in paint.  Not worth the effort in many cases, to me.

In the search area of You Tube, type in Photographix.  This will take you to a tutorial on how to assemble your Photoflex as well as how to utilize one.  I hope this helps?

I have never seen a photo etch aftermarket product, this is my first time in the utilization of photo etch.  Hence, I'll see how it turns out.

I can see your very valid comment in the case of photo etch items.  This is my first time in the use of photo etch products.  After this P-51 build, I'll post my conclusion on the need to use photo etch items.

Save yourself the hassle......go to The Small Shop.

http://www.thesmallshop.com/

They have a GREAT PE bending tool.  I have one, and I can tell you....it's the bee's knees.  It's EXCELLENT value for money.  Cheap at twice the price.

Cheers, LeeTree

Didn't know they made bending tools for photo etch. If you ever wanna try putting these MetalEarth kits together (I did an Eagle and a Raptor) a tool to help bend the nose cones would have helped.

Diferent strokes for diferent folks I guess...  The photoflex is my only commercial PE bending tool and I really like it, it works just fine for me and it's the lowest priced one out there.

I am still trying to find a picture of this mystery item. Searched high and low and all I can come up with is photo stuff. Doesn't someone have a link to this "Photoflex" thing?

I'll second that!

I avoid it when I can though I did pick up 'The Bug' from the Small Shop that LMT pointed out. As several posters have already stated I tend to use a pair of pliers or tweezers more often than 'The Bug' though...

To Jay Jay,

I suppose my assembling of the product was faulty hence my premature review on the Photo Fold.  Then again it is just my humble opinion.  I must agree that not only did this tool look really cool, it was the most cost effective photo etch bending tool out there.

I just received my photo etch bending tool today.  It weighs a ton, this tool is made and produced with extreme quality and longevity in mind.  I paid $51.00 including S&H from eBay.  So far I feel it's worth the substantial financial debt.

I'd already seen that Youtube video for the PhotoFold bending tool. I lost interest in it the second I saw there was no secure way of holding the photo etch in place, other than thumb pressure. The expense was the other turn-off. Why spend $32 for a simple device, like that, when for twenty dollars more, you can have one of the top of the line cnc machined tools?

To Rob Bye,

Hence I agree with your comment!  The bending tool I purchased is from "The Small Shop", and it's called the bug.  For the sum and S&H of $51.00, this seemed like the best cost effective tool.

That works.
Well, I didn't expect the tool to be photo-etched itself! The instructional videos were interesting.
