Aircraft of the USS Carl Vinson's 1983 World Cruise.
Posted by Wolfman_63 on Sunday, April 26, 2015 3:33 PM

I an building one 1/48 scale aircraft from each squadron that was aboard the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) during it's maiden voyage which was the 1983 World Cruise. I was aboard the ship attached to VA-37 during the entire cruise.

So far I have completed:
A-7E from VA-37:

F-14 from VF-51:

S-3A from VS-29:

EA-6B from VAQ-134:

I am starting the SH-3H from HS-4 right now.
Still have the following aircraft to build:
E-2C from VAW-114
F-14 from VF-111
A-7E from VA-105
A-6E from VA-52

Will post as each one is completed.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Not sure of VQ-1, They do not make a EA-3B in 1/48 scale. And I have been thinking about doing the COD bird as well (although 3 different squadrons landed on the Vinson depending on the ships location during the cruise.) But yes to all the others (see original post)

Very cool!  Too bad you couldn't have them all in same air wing tail code.

I believe that the Trump KA-3B kit also has the E parts in it.  I will check with a friend of mine as he just got the kit to do his as a VAQ-130 bird from the Midway.

Which kits have you used so far (manufacturer)? Great job! You just need a 1/48th Carl Vinson to display them on now.....

A-7E (VA-37) is Hobby Boss

F-14 (VF-51), S-3A, EA6B, and the soon to be built E-2C are Italeri

A-6E is Kinetic

Sh-3H is Hasagawa

F-14 (VF-111) is the Eduard "Danger Zone" edition

A-7E (VA-105) is an unpurchased kit. Will get it  later.  Which ever kit is on sale at the time.

Don't have room to make a 1/48 scale CVN-70 (LOL)

I am thinking of making the shelf look like a section of the carrier deck.

That is very cool! The early 80s are a great time for markings options as you could see early TPS, overall Gull Gray with toned down markings, or the full color markings all in the same Air Wing.

Nice work!!!  Like the idea of building a complete group.  This is similar to the plans that I have, by building one of each of the aircraft that are currently or have been based with the Idaho Air National Guard and at Mountain Home AFB.  I currently have a couple of 1/48 F-15E's that I am going to do one of the 391th FS Bold Tigers and the 389th FS T-Bolts, I also will be building the F-16C that was based with the T-Bolts.  For Gowen Field I will have the A-10C, F-4G and the F-102.  Still trying to find the RF-4C, and some others from Mt. Home.

On the Bench:  Lots of unfinished projects!  Smile

Nice idea and nice work so far.  I'm wondering after you posted the E-2C and you mentioned creating the decals for that particular scheme, what stopped you from creating correct timeframe decals for the A-7 & S-3?

The decal sets for VA-37 and VS-29 (A-7 and  S-3) have the correct paint scheme, Just the ship name and CAG/CVW group designations are from the squadrons normal attachment. When we started the world cruise, all the squadrons were done in the Hi-Vis paint scheme but by the end of the cruise many planes were re-painted to the Lo-Vis scheme.

That is  quite a collection of very well built models.Beer My faves are the two Tomcats, mostly cause that is my favorite modern jet.

Niceley done sir and thank you for your service.

An assemblage of air power!  All of them a welcome addition to any model collection.  Well done!
