Spare decals from model manufacturers
Posted by CaptainBob on Thursday, April 30, 2015 11:40 AM

Has there ever been a coordinated effort to ask model manufacturers to add a second set of decals in every kit? I wouldn't mind paying an extra dollar or two for this. As it is now, it costs about $6-$8 when I want a second set from Tamiya, for example--plus the added time for the mail. I've been using decals for a long time and I'm pretty good at it--but sometimes I mess up like everyone else.

Thanks for the response.

I've seen recommendations (from Mr. Stauffer I think) to scan decals before you start using them just in case.  Though I've found that when I print them myself I have to print at least 2 of each and overlay them to get a rich, dark color that looks good.

Personally, I think this is a great idea!

I have just been browsing through the Italieri website and notice that their website permits downloading images of some of the decal sheets. Here is one example:

Not as good as a spare decal sheet, but it may permit printing a replacement set if the builder did not scan the decals from a kit.Hmm

Hi,

Thanks for your note. What you said makes sense. I've never used blank decal sheets. Groot mentions scanning the decals from the kit. And you mentioned downloading images from the manufacturer's decals. My questions are how do I get a copy of the decals on a decal sheet, what kind of decal sheets do I buy, and why must the original kit decals be scanned? Are there decal sheets that can be put into a printer  (like photo paper, for example) and then just make a copy of the kit decals like you would  copy any other document?

Anyway, thanks again for the help. I did write a letter to the editor at FINE SCALE MODELER; like I said I'd be surprised if he prints it.

Unfortunately, it won't happen. More annoying than damaging a decal is losing a tiny piece to the carpet monster.

At least there is hope with finding the part!  Bickering on the floor with my flashlight looking for an already microscopic part...  Or looking on myself frantically to see if its sticking to me.
