WW1 German tire color
Posted by Don Stauffer on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 9:28 AM

I believe people first started loading tire rubber with carbon around the time of WW1.  Anyone know what the color of German tires were during the time the Eindecker was in service?  If they were loading the rubber with carbon the tires were black.  Before this tires were the color of fire hose- sort of a light gray/tan.  But I don't know exactly when various countries started this, and cannot find many pictures of Eindeckers in actual service.  Most pics I see now are restored ones with black tires.

From past research, light Grey or pinkish grey is widely excepted as the probable color.

The B&W pictures offer a good amount of information on the color as well.  IMHO you can tell that the tires are light Grey or pinkish grey in this picture.  I don't personally believe they were black at all (in this specific picture).

a few more examples (compare tire color to dark leather boots and dark wood prop)

So perhaps the same color as a natural rubber rubber band? Interesting...

Don

A very light gray will do. Some guys paint the wheels white then rub graphite from a #2 pencil then shoot clear flat.

Here's an old Aurora Fokker I did for the WWI GB. I just used a light flat grey as the tire color.
