How to balance a 1:350 scale E2C Hawkeye for the Enterprise
Posted by Arespontus on Saturday, May 16, 2015 2:54 PM

Hello

I am working on an 1:350 scale E2C Hawkeye for the aircraft carrier  CVN 65 Enterprise but it is back-end heavy and would like a tip on how to weigh the front-end of the Hawkeye. I tried a little bit of putty but that didn't help.

Any Suggestions?

It might take something heavier than putty--maybe a b-b or a small fishing weight?  I'm not familiar with how big the Hawkeye is, or whether you can access the insides.

If everything else fails, you could cut a short piece of stretched sprue, drill a hole to fit it in the underside of the plane where it might not be too visible; then glue the sprue in place to brace the plane on its nose gear.

I did this with a tail-heavy B-24, using a straight pin.  In the photo, you can just see it ahead of the ball turret.  Even in this 1/72 kit, I couldn't seem to load it with enough weight to make it sit right.

Whatever you try, good luck with it.

I would just use a tiny dot of super glue or white glue on the nose wheel. If you're reluctant to secure it permanently to the deck, all it would take is a little tug to pop it free should you choose to move it.

I used a small drill and drilled a couple of holes from the bottom near the front then I CA glued small pieces of solder in the holes. If I recall it took 3 small pieces to weigh the from down. I also had the PE props and made the spinner out of solder as well.

Thanks, I ended up using some clear sprue and glued underneath the Hawkeye where it isn't to visible
