Building the aircraft from the Len Deighton's novel Bomber
Posted by bigscaledave on Friday, June 19, 2015 9:41 PM

Bomber, I read this book at a pivotal time in my life, and it has colored my feelings about war ever since. This was probably Mr.Deightons best work. Why it was never made into a movie ?  well I don't know, but it's impact on my mind is still with me. For those of you who have not read this book I highly recommend it. An average reader can go through this novel in about 2-3 days tops. Well having said that. I have wanted for years, to build the aircraft of this book. They, the aircraft are treated almost like characters in this book. HK models, the folks who brought us a 1/32 scale B-17 G , also came out with a 1/32 scale Lancaster and are going to bring us a 1/32 scale Mosquito of the bomber type. Which were used to drop flares for the bombers to help in finding the target for the night. I think one company already has a 1/32 scale Ju-88, and I think there is a nightfighter version of this German workhorse. This would be a good group build, read the book, build the aircraft involved in said book then discuss the airplanes themselves...could be fun, but this is just an idea I had. Please tell me your thoughts on this idea. As always a preemptive thank you to anyone who gives me feedback on this receding hair brain idea...On a side note the unlucky town in Deighton's book sounds a lot like the raid on Dresden

I've heard the name, but never read any of his work. I would probably rate my own reading experience of a book like that as "Thud Ridge". Of course that was non fiction, but it did have a captivating effect upon me as a youngster.

Hello, Devil Dawg and Silkpusher, OK you guys must be vets. WELCOME HOME ! One of my missions in this life is to do what this whole country should have done at the time, WELCOME HOME ! it's great to have you back amonst usens. Really the other thing that left a deep mark on me was seeing Soldiers being spit on when they were changing planes at LA X . That was uncalled for period...Two of my first cousins spent 365 days and a wake up in Green Hell. Well I had better stop with that before I get bent out of shape. There were a couple of old War Bird drivers over there too, Bud Anderson and Robin Olds, those two were both triple aces flying P-51s. They were on my list of guys I wanted to meet at some point in my life. Wanted to met Jimmy Dolittle "the tallest short dude who ever walk this Earth". And Kelly Johnson, I wanted to know how he sold the USAAC that contraption he called Lightning, if somebody wanted to sell that thing to me, I'd ask em' just what planet did you find that thing on ? P-38 the strangest airplane I ever did see, Ah' you guys don't know where I could find one ovm' do ya ? NO smart elic a real one ! OH yes, going to have to get a copy of Thud Ridge sound's like a good read. Well model on dudes

Mr. Deighton also wrote a novel called Goodbye Mickey Mouse, which was about P-51 pilots of the Eighth Air Force. Almost as good as Bomber. The latter book made a big impression on me, too. Thanks for reminding me of it.

I haven't read the book, but I've seen it a few times and definitely would be down with doing a group build where we read the book and build one of the planes.

I'll be following this one.

Hello everyone, BigScaleDave here I have been away for a while. I still think that a read and build would be a fun thing to do,"this is about my Len Deighton's Bomber, read and build idea". I would like to hear from everyone about this idea, please give me some more feed back about this topic. If you hate it or love it, I'm interested in knowing just how it went over here on the forum, good or bad...Oh yeah I see that Tamiya is also coming out with a 1/32 scale Mosquito, it's the fighter bomber type but Tamiya could easily produce a night bomber/path finder with this kit. Well let me know what you think good or bad.
