F-105D Thunderchief

The F-105D is one of my all time favorite airplane.  HobbyBoss offers a 1/48 kit, which is much more expensive than a Revell kit.  Is the HobbyBoss kit worth the price?

I bet the Monogram kit is also cheaper.  Is the H.B. kit a straight back of a humper?  Come to think of it, I heard they modified the Monogram kit to have the big hump too.  Personally, I like it without the hump.

I don't know about a humper.  Anyway, according to research I've done, the Hobby Boss kit (around $50) seems no better than a Revell kit (around $20) except for recessed panel lines. A reviewer wrote the HB kit was tricky to build.

I'm currently building the hobbyboss kit. It's an awesome kit in my opinion. Great fit, and excellent detail. Panel lines and rivets are nice and restrained. I think you might have to modify part of the spine depending on the year you want to represent. The landing gear is a bit fidelly and there are a few sink marks on the fuselage sides, but are easy to get to and fill.

I can not comment o n the monogram kit but I built the Trumpeter one not to long ago and it is very nice. As stated before the detail and fit out the box is very good. The long undercart is VERY flimsy and I store mine on a cradle as I think longterm weight on them will cause damage.

Unless the other kit is better in this department I would invest in an AM set.

DOn't know of the different humps, here is the trump one I built...

I recently finished the Monogram kit. Comparing it with the HB kit, is similar to comparing Monogram's F-100D to Trumpeter's: if you want accurate, go with Monogram, if you want a relatively easy build, with recessed panel lines, go with HB. Contrary to some Internet reviews and drawings, Monogram's nose is actually pretty close to the real thing. I've had the opportunity to compare a built one with a real Thud, and it captures the shape of the nose pretty well. What throws the look off is the radome doesn't mate with the fuselage very well, and the pitot tube is too large and off-center. Replace it with a Master Model brass one, and it completely changes the look of the model. The main gear is a little wiggly, but one I built over 20 years ago and sat on the shelf and survived 2 moves without breaking. There are a few small details that need tweaking, such as some antennae left over from the F-105G kit, and the intakes are a pain in the neck, but overall, it's a pretty good kit.
