In Bob Johnson's book "Thunderbolt", he writes about the switch from Curtiss to Ham-Stan props.
The Curtiss props were a maint headache, main problem was run-a-ways, (uncontroled operation.)
The main reason for change was the Ham-Stan props had a broader chord ("Paddel-bladed") which was able to better absorb the additional power of the later Dash number R-2800 engines.
Hope this helps. The book is avalible on Amazon.
