1/72 Academy SR-71A
Posted by Grant Dalzell on Monday, August 3, 2015 1:08 AM

61-7974, Det. 1, 9th SRW, Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan, 1968. In 1968, 3 SR-71's are deployed to Kadena to fly over the hottest airspace in Asia, and 974 was one of them. "Ichi ban" (number 1) was added to "habu" snake, showing 974 was the best SR-71. Habu snakes were applied as mission marks too.

This kit does not have much to it in the way of parts, I am guessing that this is an Academy re-box of an old kit. It went together pretty good, and I know these aircraft are black from nose to tail but I took the liberty of using metalizers on the burners to give it a bit of colour other than said black

Painted with Tamiya Nato black and selected panels with Tamiya rubber black. Gunze Mr. metalizers on the burners, I used Flory grey wash but rubbed it right back, only wanting it to stick in panel lines. Finished off with Vallejo satin varnish. Thanks for looking

And for size comparison, a 1/72 Macchi next to it

Hello Grant!

A very nice looking SR-71 - congratulations! Again, I like the shading of the panel lines on your model. That Macchi looks very nice, too! Good luck with your next projects - keep 'em babies comin' - and have a nice day

Love the weathering and variations in panel appearance!  Looks very realistic.

Really nice job on this, love the finish, and I like those mission marks as well. I have the Italeri kit and was wondering how to paint it. Thanks for the idea's.

Are those kit supplied decals.

Thank you guys. Bish, they are the kit decals but they are Cartograf, they conformed really well in to the corrugated panels

Thanks Grant. Unfortunately the Italeri kit doesn't have such a nice set of decals. I have seen an AM set with this markings, but at £12 its a bit pricey for doing one aircraft.

Well done Grant Yes The Blackbird is my favorite aircraft, period. Heck, it may be my favorite vehicle of any kind, period- with the possible exception of the one that reliably gets me to work. She's definitely a sizeable aircraft.

Beautiful work, it's so hard to get all black aircraft to look 'right' but you've done a great job here. I've got some of the light Flory wash but haven't had a chance to use it yet.

NOTES: 1st that's a great job. The aircraft are actually painted dark blue. The paint gets burned with the heat generated at mach 3+ speeds. When on the ground the aircraft are drained of their fuel because the fuel is in the wings and the cool metal shrinks and fuel leaks. The aircraft get enough fuel put in them to get them airborn and to a tanker. They top off fuel in the air and the heat from the speed expands the metal and seals the fuel tanks. The top speed and altitude are still "top secret", but it has been public knowledge that to get down for a landing in CA, say Beal AFB, the "let down" starts over Brazil. There is a great story involving an SR71 and ZHA ZHA Gabor. (or was it Ava Gabor). The SR71 is a great old bird and your model is a great tribute to it.
