B-17G Color questions
Posted by Spitfire on Monday, August 24, 2015 9:37 AM

This is regarding the Revell/Monogram B-17G.  I know many of you have done this project and I had a couple questions regarding color that were'nt really clear in the instructions.

1) The instructions call for the area behind the four engines to be painted zinc chromate.  I know as a general rule, yellow zinc chr is used for wheel wells etc, and green zinc chr is used for the interior.  Which one would apply for the engine area?  and is zinc chromate even appropriate here (because on the real plane, that engine area would go farther back into the cowling, so it would seem a dark color would be appropriate to give an impression of depth)?

2) The instructions call for the center hubs that protrude forward from the props to be blue.  That's all it says is just blue.  Does anyone know specifically which shade of blue these tips were colored?

I'm pretty sure that the blue is true blue, FS 15102. Can you see enough of the chromate area to worry about it?

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

I'd go green. If you're mounting all the engines, I wouldn't do much more than that.

As far as the prop hubs go, they were  natural aluminum. If they were painted, it was a personal decoration, or a squadron recognition feature, so they would be in the "squadron color", meaning you have to research that to come up with the appropriate shade.

You could get by with leaving the firewalls natural metal, once the engines are mounted and the cowls on, almost none of it can be seen between the cylinders.

Have you flown a Ford lately?

If it is the Revell Monogram B-17G with the diagonal tail band then the blue of the prop hub should be the same as the blue of the diagonal tail band
