Viet Nam Counter Invader
Posted by plasticjunkie on Friday, September 18, 2015 10:06 PM

I built this 1/72 Italeri B-26K not too long ago for the 50th Anniversary Viet Nam GB. The cockpit was modified to the correct two man configuration. Resin KC135 wheels were used as the K series was upgraded to use these. Scratch built early M31 Funny Bombs were made and loaded into the bomb bay.

A brief history about the K series:

Reading from the A-26 Invader in Action Squadron Series book, it details that the K's were highly modified by a firm called On-Mark Engineering Company located in Van Nuys, California in 1964. The wings were strengthened and rebuilt and the fuselages remanufactured without the turrets. They added the beefier KC-135 brakes and tires, Pratt & Whitney R-2800-103W, a monster prop, enlarged dorsal fin and updated avionics. They served with the USAF 609th SOS well into late 1969. The last known fully armed Invader in military use made its last flight in July of 1977 under Indonesian Air Force service.

This particular aircraft was an A-26A, ex-4435375 that served in the Congo as RF 646 in 1964. Was transferred to the 609th SOS, SEA on 3-67 and was lost in combat on 7-8-69.

On the night of July 8th 1969, TA 646 flown by Major Elmo Sizemore hit a stone outcropping in the Plaine des Jarres in Laos, after making a strafing run on a VC position, killing all aboard.

Major Sizemore and Navigator Major Howard Andre were the last Nimrod crew to perish in Viet Nam. The crash site was located in 2012 and the remains of both airmen were recovered and interred at Arlington National Cemetery the following year.

Just excellent, Ernie -

Really good build and finish, the text details added greatly to the post. I never knew anything about that series of the -26, nice to learn about it now.

Thanks for the post and photos.

Thanks guys for the kind words.

Patrick

Glad you like my Invader. I actually did not know the fate of the aircraft till I started digging for details. It was sad to learn that those two brave men laid MIA for 43 years on a hill top.

I also had no idea that the A-26 had such a long operational life.

Crown

Is it CIA B-26K  from 21 l'eme Escadrile, 21 Wing 2'eme Groupement, 1966-67, call sign FR 649? if so, then the top is gloss emerald green FS 14062 and light grey underneath FS 16492.

Nice Invader!  Before ON Mark did the K conversions they did a lot of executive conversions of the A-26.

Thanks Jeaton. I think that's why the military asked that company to do the work cause of their previous experience converting the Invader.

Nice work on the Invader.  Fascinating story about the real plane and her crew.
