Revell of Germany 1:48 Dornier Do335 "Pheil" AKA: Donier Arrow

To my fellow forum members,

This very interesting build is an old school product.  I recalled that the Arrow was sold as a Monogram product some forty years ago!  Wow, am I that old?  LOL!

Anyway, all of my builds until recently, have been of WWII American fighters as well as bombers.  Don't ask me why, I just felt gravitated to the design concepts of American aircraft.  Since returning after my forty year haitus, interestingly, I've built a Mitsubishi Zero and now a Donier Arrow.  How time flies as well as taste of design changes.

I hope you find this next build of mine interesting as well as unusual.  Thank you so much FSM forum members for allowing me to be able to share with you my up and coming build!

Good luck on your new project Toshi.I bought this kit when it was new from Monogram back in 1974. Mine never saw the day of light but maybe someday I'll pick up the kit again.A very unique aircraft to say the least.

I hope you do, and yes, it is truly a unique design far ahead of it's time.  I do recommend this kit.  Thank you for the read and reply!

Here are some photos of the 335.  I'm building the two seater variant, Do335A-12.  Thank you forum members and have a safe and great weekend!

Just a tip from your Uncle Jay there Toshi...

When the paint bleeds past the intended target ( as in your yellow plumbing on the engine block for example)  you can lightly scribe where the plumbing meets the engine block with a #11 Xacto blade, with the idea of scraping the excess paint off and also creating a "grove" between the two parts.  Then use your favorite wash over the area and the wash stays in the scribed lines , thus creating a more realistic and detailed look.

Goodness I built this thing when it first came out in 1974 Indifferent and had it till a couple of months back when I sold it on Ebay for $60! It's a very good kit with some nice molded details. The Pfeil was a revolutionay aircraft that would have had IMO one extraordinary combat record if it had been developed earlier in the war. As I read on it during testing with the captured examples, it was faster than anything we had.

I believe the closest it got to combat was when one was being test flown and several Typhoons attempted to close in to attack but the Pfeil went full power and waved bye bye as the Typhoons could not keep up with its speed.

Like JJ says, make a dark wash and apply it on and let it dry. It will create shadows and add dimension to the molded details making them look even better.

I Agree with your statement, this is one unique plane to behold!  I'll add the wash on today, thanks for the tip.

There is a Tamiya and Hasegawa Donier 335.  Mrs. Toshi chose the Revell of Germany since I've never built anything from Revell of Germany.  I hope this one comes out ok.  Thanks for the visit!

I believe the Hase one is a re box of the Monogram kit, so basically the same as the one you have. We had a 335 GB last year and quite a few people entered the Mono/Revell and the Tamiya kits.

The Tamiya Pfeil has better details and recessed panel lines, it also costs more than the old Monogram. I have built both and will go with the Tamiya hands down. I made a Tamiya Heavily Armed version for the Dornier GB and opened up every panel I could.

Oh wow, I think from this point on, I'll stick with Tamiya products.  They continue to push the envelope.  I've noticed they also think out of the box in regards to assembly.  Thanks again for the FYI!

I stayed up late and messed around with the cockpit last night.  This is as far as I got.  I have to stop now and head out to Walmart and grab some lead fishing sinkers so that the 335 doesn't sit on it's tail end.

Some nice work there Toshi. I take it the two pits are separate rather than one large one.

Yes, it's two separate pits.  If you opt for the single pit, it looks like what you see at the bottom.  The second pit sits a bit higher.  Here are both pits side by side.

Here is a quick update on the first cockpit.  I understand that the second cockpit was to be for a trainer scenario.  With that in mind, they utilized the second cockpit and turned the 335 into a night fighter.  Of course it was not to be.

You are correct there, the A-12 was to have been the trainer version with the Nightfighter being the B-6 which also had longer wings. The rear cockpit for the B-6 was also different and had a small bubble canopy.

Some more nice work there Toshi.

I so enjoy our discussions in regards to the historical authentic knowledge that we share on FSM forum.  I want to thank you for this.  Here I have made some ballasts for the tricycle landing gear so as not to create a tail sitter.  Here are the adjustments thus far.
