This is the old Otaki reboxed under Aiiri 1/48 F6F-3 Hellcat that I did as a simple build/comission. I converted it to a -5 by blocking out the small windows behind the head rest area. I also replaced the plastic wing guns with brass tubing. Decals are from Super Scale International and the markings are for a -5 from VF 83 aboard the USS Essex in 1945. Paint is MM enamel Glossy Sea Blue. Thanks for looking.
Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!
Very nicely done PJ! How did you blank out the rear windows?
F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!
U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!
N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Thanks stik. I traced the outline of the windows on plastic sheet and Tenaxed them in place. One needed a little Perfect Plastic Putty only. I think the mold goes back to the 80's but it goes together very easy and has recessed panel lines. I forgot to mention that I did a Flory Wash on the panel lines.
Very nice, PlasticJunkie! But that is a Hellcat, not Wildcat
SubarooMike Very nice, PlasticJunkie! But that is a Hellcat, not Wildcat
A lot of F6's around lately. Nice work PJ.

PJ, I think that the molds actually go back to late 70s. I built the same kit a few years back but did a -3 in the tri color cat mouth scheme off USS Princeton. It is a great kit that with a little extra effort like you put in can really be a winner.
Very, very nice PJ. Lovely build indeed.
You can't ever have enough Hellcats.

Sweet build!
Beautiful job PJ! I love those old Aiiri kits, maybe a little lacking in cockpit detail but otherwise still a good kit today.
BTW: I'm guessing you used the Flory light wash?

Oh wow, what a fantastic job. I need to learn how you do your weathering like that. Awesome.

Beautiful job Ernie. I especially like the color choice.
I'm finally retired. Now time I got, money I don't.
Thank you gentlemen for all for the great comments and thanks for taking a peek.

This was a comission and he wanted it as simple build. I have another one that I will make for myself with an open canopy. I have a resin pit that I got on sale for $4 and the Squadron vac canopies that are thinner than the kit ones. I also plan on adding more details to it. I used Flory's Dark Dirt wash just to darken them a bit. The kit decals are trash so after market ones are a must.
The model was sealed in several hand brushed coats of Future and set aside for 2 days to cure. I then applied Flory Dark Dirt Wash all over the plane and set aside to completely dry. This Flory Wash is fantastic as you gently wipe in the direction of the air foil with a slightly damp piece of paper towel. It leaves a light coating of the wash that looks like slight fading and wear killing some of the gloss and staying in the recessed details darkening them just a bit. It's really very simple to use.
Thanks PJ, I picked up some of the Flory light dirt wash but haven't used it yet. Next navy blue plane I do I think I'll try the dark dirt wash like you did and see how it turns out first though.
Nice build. Love the exhaust stain.

Some directions using the Flory Wash:
Do not use directly from the bottle. Pour a little in a cap or whatever you have as a small container. This stuff cannot be contaminated by any other substance like decal setting liquids, etc.
It may also react differently over certain paints. Bish had issues with the paint brand he uses (I forgot which one) and I had issues over Testor's gloss enamel paint in the small bottle. MM gloss paints and Future appear to be just fine. Also use a dedicated brush for this wash and rinse in tap water only.
Do not pour back into the bottle any left over wash. The trick is not to contaminate the entire bottle. Other than these issues it works really good.
Oh wow, I've been using it out of the bottle and so far haven't had any problems. I'll try decanting a little into a cup next time I use it. Thanks for the tips!
No sweat buddy! I did the same thing till I was told by another member to avoid that practice just in case. I think it's mentioned in the Flory video too.
Thanks Mike!
Thats a pretty looking Cat, PJ. Crisp, clean build.
