Paint colors for markings
Posted by 7474 on Friday, October 23, 2015 12:57 PM

I want to try to paint markings, rather than use decals. Does anyone have paint color matches for WW2 RAF roundels, USAAF Stars and Bars, IJN/AF Hinimoras? I like to use Tamiya and MM Acrylics. Thanks for any replies.

For US built aircraft that is easy- MM makes Insignia Blue, Insignia Red, and Insignia White that was used for the markings on aircraft made for US and Lend Lease use. Now UK built aircraft used the original BSC shades which were a tad bit different, especially the Red which was darker and with a hint of brown.

As far as Japanese colors go, that is gonna be more up in the air as to which paint shade is a good starting point.

Some years ago I had seen at a hobby show some stencil sets for USAAF, RAF, and Luftwaffe. Wonder if they are still around?

I think Verlinden has stencils still out there.

I've seen stensils for painting. Wish there was a "Roundel Red" and "Roundel Blue" available.
