Paper Drop Tanks
Posted by Cdn Colin on Thursday, October 29, 2015 5:20 PM

I'm buiding Monogram's 1/48 P-51D and noticed that they put the filler caps on opposite sides of the drop tanks.  Would/could they have been installed with the filler cap facing to the right instead of the left?

I'm not sure if the plumbing would have worked or looked the same with that configuration.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

Pictures of the real thing are your best friend. Remember, you are inserting logical thinking into the situation,it may backfire. Good luck.

From what I can see, it would be possible, but a real PITA, so I don't think they would.  I think I'll leave the tanks off.

Not sure about the fill caps.  Asked a similar question concerning the plumbing some time ago.

Ok went throught the Pony stuff I have. This is mostly from "The Yoxford Boys", the 357th. The paper ones seem to have their fill caps more or less centered on the top of the nose, the piping handed and on the outsides of the pylons. The metal ones look to mostly have the fillcaps on the left looking forward, some more centered, piping handed.

I just wouldn't sweat it.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Here's what I found:

The bands holding the mounting bracket look like they could be slipped around to rotate the tank.  But the plumbing lines are offset from the filler cap.  It looks pretty universal that filler caps were offset to the same side.

I agree; no reason to sweat.
