Ikar,

That "D" the made the emergency landing at DaNang was 56-0665. It was patched up with plywood, flown back to Tinker AFB, Repaired and flown to the USAF Museum where its still on display. Just so you know.

I was a Beale for 3 months, then got sent to Udorn.  We had a guy at Beale the came back from rocket city with two stories....The first was a rocket attack and after it was over, he wondered who tore the plywood door off the hooch.... he was told he did after the first one went off, hench the nickname of "lurch" that followed him back to the states.  And he was our ALT 28 shop guy.  He tossed around that 150 lb oil soaked box like it was a toy.  The other story was a FNG was having a smoke outside on a log or timber and another attack started, after it was over he was supposedly found still sitting there, burned down to the filter smoke still in his fingers, comatose with a rocket (dud) stuck in the gorund between his knees.  Never verified that one.

Left Udorn and wound up at Shaw and more F4's, was red X qualified as a buck sgt, ran graveyard, had both of my 7 levels and a line # for staff and a reup for 6 years and headed to Mather (back to BUFF's).  Reup got screwed after I p.o.ed my reporting official before my last APR there before leaving.

That FNG coulda' lost a toe!

Looking good, Crown. The cockpit clear part cross section seems a tad narrower than the fuselage?

You're doing a fantastic job so far.  I can't wait to see the B-52 completed.  Very nice!

The base paper at Ellsworth called it a "G" and the first of the newer series to be sent.  I should have taken a few more shots but film was running low and I had to get ready to go to work.

Here's one unusual shot I did manage to get:

The last two shots were taken when I was at Minot.  I checked the original picture with a magnifier and it deffinately is carrying a gattling gun.  Did you notice the hole in the tail?

What base were you at?  I got sent to three S.A.C. bases.  WHen I got to my first one I was told that once you were in S.A.C. you never got out of it.  Two months after I arrived I had orders for Danang.  I actually had people wanting me to turn over my assignment to "Rocket City" to them so they could get out of there.

I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB (aka as KI Siberia!) in Michigan's Upper Peninsula between 83-87. 410th Bomb Wing(Heavy) with B-52H's, KC-135A's and the last active duty F-106 squadron the 87th FIS The Red Bulls.

One TDY to Dyess was the extent of my travels but my exciting moment came when I was going through the entry control point into the alert pad and got bumped out of the line by my buddy Smitty who told me quote;"Can't talk right now, one of the weapons is leaking!"unquote. Talk about nearly crapping myself.

Btw, if I'm not mistaken, those items in the bomb bay are ADM-28 Quail decoys. Dropped on a diverging flight path, they were supposed to go off electronically screaming their brains out diverting enemy fighters away from the bomber. No idea how effective they were.

No, SAC had no sense of humor. The 62nd FIS was stationed at KI for awhile flying F-101B's and at one point they had won the William Tell competition. So they put up a sign outside Base Ops that said "Home of the 62nd FIS, Defenders of SAC." Lmao! Didn't stay up very long, needless to say.

How did half my entry get underlined?  Must be going senile.

Then there was the B-52 that made an emergency landing at Danang because of battle damage.  They had a S.A.M. go off under theri aircraft that tore teh rear half of their left wing tank off and peppered the wings with shrapnel causing massive fuel loss.   I heard they did everything they could to get that mortor magnet out as fast as they could.

It was one of the top two aircraft the enemy hated the most, Spectre being the second.

So you're saying that S.A.C. and the Air Force have no sense of humor?  Ain't that the truth. Neither does P.A.C.A.F.  And thereby hangs a story.

If you walked into the front of our squadron building, A.K.A. the police station, at Ellsworth we had a big portrait of Moses comming down the mountain.  In the lower corner ot the tablets were the words "SAC Suppliment"  Wish I had taken a picture of that one.

I may be mistaken Ikar01, but I'm fairly sure the first pic of a G is actually an H model based on the engine nacelles. Pretty sure the last pictured one is actually a G.

The major differences between a G & an H are the engines and the guns. G used J-57 turbojets with water injection, the H used TF-33 turbofans; much quieter and more power on takeoff. I never saw one in person but what I've read, the G's were real smokers at takeoff with the water injection.

G's used a turret with a quartet of .50 caliber machine guns, H was equipped with a six barreled 20mm Vulcan(same gun used on most modern US fighters). The story goes the guns were removed after an incident in which a HARM missile locked onto the B-52's tail gun radar and hit it. The aircraft was immediately renamed by its crew "In HARMS way". Lol!

I've been a big BUFF fan since I was stationed at a B-52 base in the mid 80's. Watching a MITO was awesome!

The B-52H had a 20mm M61 remotely operated, the B-52G and earlier had a quad 0.50". The H had different engines than the earlier ones.

Chasing the ultimate build.

I like this kit, I have one in the stash as well.  I picked up the Golden Dragon conversion set to build it into a B-52D.  Looking forward to your progress.

I wonder how hard it would be to turn it into a "G"?

That is a very nice kit. The right scale, more refined than the earlier versions and the minicraft kit.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
