Completed Tamiya 1:32 P-51D Mustang Special Edition Silver Chrome Plated
Posted by Toshi on Saturday, November 7, 2015 7:27 AM

To my fellow forum members,

Here we go for another wild and crazy ride with Toshi.  At some point, I'm going to get myself in trouble.  Until then, I'll keep blasting away at building model kit builds.  Please view the start of this build below.  Thank you very much for your support.  You just don't know how much it means to me.

Toshi

Here's the box art and the special FSM how to finish a kit magazine I pre-ordered.

My first Mustang build after a 40 year hiatus.

Hopefully this one will challenge you a bit more than the F-15 did lol.

I've always wondered about these pre-plated kits and how well they will turn out. I know you won't disappoint Toshi. :)

Looking forward to this.  :D

LOL!  LOL!  LOL!  You always make me laugh and bring a smile on my face and it makes my day.  All I know is that I have to be very careful handling of the exterior of the P-51D.  My daughter made a suggestion, tell me what you think.  She said take all the unpainted parts and spray them all silver so that it matches the entire kit.  I think this is a really awesome idea.  Something that's never been done before.  I like challenging myself with cutting edge builds as well as technique.

Sometimes it doesn't turn out but at other times it makes me very excited with a sense of great accomplishment.  We can only see what happens.  Thank you my friend and sensei for always being there for me.  You've always got my back and I want to personally thank you for that!

Hi, Toshi -

It just dawned on me, you're stimulating the economy by hiring many people to help you build at this furious pace.

Sneaky, (and well done.)     (:>)

Beautious job on the F-15, I think I'll quit building and just look at your models, you've made huge advancements in such a short time, a very skilled model builder already.

Earlier today someone had jokingly mentioned a 1:72 Nimitz carrier, how about giving that a go, maybe that one would keep you occupied for, oh, say two weeks.

Keep 'em coming Toshi, thanks for all the posts and photos.

LOL Toshi. I'm just waiting for you to build more armor lol! These wing thingies are cool, and I enjoy building them too, but Armor is king lol!

Painting the entire model silver? Hmm... That could be quite challenging. Especially if you can eliminate the seams and still get a beautifully flawless finish.

I like it! Aim high my friend.  :D

LOL!  Very funny, you've made my day!  Oh no, please do not cease making models on my account, how can I learn unless forum members don't make builds.  I'll never learn from you all.

Mrs. Toshi continues to point at the Battleship Arizona.  Maybe that's something I'll go for that.

As long as I can breath, I'll do my best to keep on building!  Your very kind to thank me in sharing my threads, my I say it's my pleasure!  Take care of your self and enjoy your weekend.

Yours Truly,

Toshi

I almost purchased a Tamiya Sherman tank but changed my mind, how funny is that?  The seams and fingerprints have been some thing that I'm very weary about.  We can only wait and see.  I'll work really hard on this particular kit, that's all I can promise at this time!

OK guys, put your seat builts on, this bird will be flying in no time at all! Actually, I frequently paint my aircraft with a prime or base coat of silver. What color is an aircraft before it is painted, or left in a NMF? I just wonder how the surface of this Mustang will hold paint. Show us Toshi

LOL!  You made my day!  I never thought of that, but you correct in that the primer is NMF.  I will not paint the exterior of the surface of the P-51D as it's been silver plated.

This is going to be interesting to watch. The one thing that would worry me is the gluing and sanding of the silver parts. Nice work on the engine, looks good so far.

Thanks Bish!  My goal is to not have to sand anything with no seam issues.  As for the glue, I've been using Tamiya Extra Thin Cement.  I hope I can pull this off.  Thank you for following along.

The Toshi Aircraft Company has production back up and running.

Since you are keeping the chrome and cannot do the proper jobs on the seams as a result, one thing to keep in mind.  You have to sand the chrome plating off the mating surfaces for glued parts or the plastic glue just won't hold.

+1       Sand, sand, sand.  The Tam extra thin will not touch this stuff.  I say oven cleaner the whole thing haha.  That coating is a pain in the butt because you will always see seams and gaps.

Okay Toshi, what is this, your fourth kit since I started my B-17. I'm still on the interior. You make me feel like I am not building at all. That plated styrene may pose some hiddin challanges, good luck.

O.K., now let's back up a minute here. When I said " I frequently paint my aircraft with a prime or base coat of silver", That is after taking care of all seams. If you join two chrome parts together; you are likely to be left with a seam. If you do not care about the seam that is O.K.; but if you intend on building a half-way decent model, you will have to fix it. That means if I were building a chrome plated Mustang, the first thing that I would do is strip the plating off (before assembly) and proceed as normal creating a NMF. If I were to join the two chrome parts and ended up with an inevitable seam; I would repair the seam, prime the whole (now assembeld)model, then proceed as normal.

Actually, you cannot build this chrome plated kit right with the chrome plating. You cannot create panel variation on the fuselage or create the laminar wings.

If you should decide to scrap the chrome idea and use bleach or brake fluid to take it all off you will still need to sand the gluing surfaces like I saidearlier. To get that smooth chrome finish the parts are given a high gloss coat (lacquer?) that does not come off with the chrome. I learned the hard way when I did one the 1/48 chrome kids and the seams would pop open if I looked at it funny.

Most definately, I will ensure that the mating surfaces are free and clear of the silver plating.  Thank you for watching my back.

Yes, I agree that the plated surfaces will be an issue.  Thank you for the tip BrandonK.  It's Quality and not Speed that gets the job done.
