Motorized B-17 kit still out there?
Posted by uilleann on Saturday, March 13, 2004 8:52 PM
Several years ago (ok, about 15) I remember building a motorized B-17 kit. I don't remember the exact make, but it was very likely either Monogram or Testors. It came with four small build-them-yourself electric motors - the same type youd find in model train engines with the multiple fine copper wire wound around a steel former. I *think* the kit was in 1/72 but this was a long time ago.

Anyone remember seeing this kit around - and if so is it still available?

Sounds like a Lindbergh. But I'm not sure. I did several of their planes and ships that you had to build the motor in. I also remember they had some out with "real battle damage". I don't think they're in production anymore and you might find them on e-bay.

It was a Lindbergh in box scale (1/63 I think). From the late fifties thru the sixties, Lindbergh produced produced a whole line of boats and aircraft that were equipped with electric motors (both assembled and unbuilt). The motors operated on 1 1/2 or 3 volts depending on the size of the model. The ships were probably the best sellers as you could operate them in a creek or pond. The smallest was a destroyer that was about 6" long and supposed to operate on a single AA battery but it didn't take us long to hook up two AAA batteries which really made it move. Cost less than a buck if I remember correctly.

Yeah I remember the ships all too well. There must be a hundred of them in the creek behind the old house that didn't make it past the shore defenses (BB Gun!!)

All you need is four 3 volt electic motors and a 1/48th Revellogram B-17 kit and a little basic wiring. I've been saving those Crest electric toothbrushes for the motors inside.

Clear Left!

Lindberg...really? I don't even recognize this name. Would anyone know if the kit is still in production or where I could find either box art, or better yet, photos of a build of this kit in progress?

I've seen motorized Lindbergh jet models like the F-104 and the F-8 but I missed that B-17. Would appreciate also if somebody can post the box art or photos of the model.

Wow. That B-17 Looks sweet! Though, i've never seen a kit in 1/64th scale before! I'd build this if i had the money and the skill to assemble a Lindburg kit (I hear there's more flash then model...)

Shrikes, the last time I saw these Lindbergh jets was in the late 60's. Actually, what was motorized in the F-8 Crusader ( I think it's in 1/48 scale) is the jet sound. The do-it-yourself motor provided is made to spin against a metal strip producing a squeaking 'jet whine' sound.

About 15 years ago I bought a couple of hundred unbuilt models from the estate of an older modeler - I was interested in the 1/72 models and squirrled the 1/48 models away in storage planning to sell them later. Still got them out there (out of sight, out of mind) and I know there is at least one each of a Lindberg 1/48 motorized Stuka, a Lindberg 1/48 F-86 and anfother 1/48 motorized kit (I think its an F-8). Guess I'll have to check.

It definitely was a Lindberg model. My father bought me one 30 years ago. Lindberg made also a non motorized version which sometimes you can find in eBay. If you want to see the box go to http://groups.msn.com/BOXART/lindbergavionesmotorized.msnwSmile [:)]
