Real G

I painted the aft fuselage interior green, but later found out that it should be aluminum.

Actually G, you might be right all along for C/D interiors:

This shot looks like interior green as done by Boeing.

Wow, great photo find!  The interior definitely looks painted.  Maybe silver lacquer, since some A/C of the 1930s had this.  I may have to use the photo to update my kit's floor boards now.  Aw drats, more AMS.  Surprise

The kit tires have an odd sort of squarish cross section though.

I have seen OOTB builds of Academy's B-17s, and they look fine.  I wasn't aware of the dihedral issue until a friend told me about it when I got the kit.  The rest of the things I mentioned is just AMS talking.

Actually just use bald tires which I believe the kit uses or like Squadron's #TD72020 or TD72044.  Don't use the G checkered ones.  Here is a link to "Air Force" and "Maryann":

http://www.aerovintage.com/airforce.htm

As you can see, it uses bald tires.

Real G,

Really appreciate the time you took to write all that out. I do have more questions for you however.

Were the wheels different on the MkI than on say the MkIII (B-17G)? I think i saw that Eduard offered a -G model wheel set.

Also, how crucial are the changes? I know i want it to be accurate, but it would also be my first Aircraft build and i dont want to make a muck of it trying to correct something and then ruining it.

Am i better off just waiting until i am more experienced?

Thanks,

Jay

Try to find the movie "Air Force" on the movie sites or YouTube as it used B models when it was filmed in 1942.  It has alot of interior shots for reference.

I have the Italeri B-17 Fortress I kit and have started it.  The thing most everyone will tell you is that the dihedral of the wings is exagerrated.  I shimmed my upper wing halves at the fuselage joint and got the wings to almost level, which is what it should be I am told.

The landing gear mounting angle will need tweaking to compensate for the change in dihedral.  I hate the way Academy engineered the gear mounting system, as you have to add them before gluing the wings halves together.  The tires are weak on detail.  True Details makes a replacement, but as all of their tires, look flat.

The nose cap has huge molded-in holes for the later B-17 guns, but Squadron makes a vac-form replacement with these holes closed off.  The cockpit roof has a teardrop fairing that is thick, but the Squadron vac set has it already molded onto the roof.  The other clear parts on the Squadron set are not really needed, as the kit parts are acceptable.  The small rectangular windows around the nose need some sheet plastic shims in their openings to fit snugly.

Finally, the interior is highly suspect or missing altogether.  I tweaked the kit's front office just a little.  The instrument panel decal is a joke and looks terrible - but I used it anyway! I scratchbuilt the missing sections of the rear crew compartment.  You can't see much except for maybe the radio operator's section via the dorsal window.  I painted the aft fuselage interior green, but later found out that it should be aluminum.

Hope that helps, not hinders your build!

I built the B-17E kit in Coastal Command markings, my build log is here:

Nice kit, just a few spots to deal with.

I have the Academy Colin Kelly kit, unbuilt. It looks to be very nice, I have built the Belle and it went together just fine.

Jay, if thats the case, then these Academy/Italri kits will be your only option. I believe they are the only company to make these early versions.

Thanks guys, Think will keep searching for reviews/build logs. I really want a RAF 17, even though they didnt use them for long before transferring them to Coastal Command. I'd like to have at least 1 of each bomber that served with bomber command as thats where my grandfather served.

In which case jay you should be ok. Those Academy kits are really nice, I think until the Revell G kit, they were considered by many the best 72nd B-17's. I would be interested to see that built. I have an Academy C kit with AM markings for a Fort 1.

The Italeri kit is a repop of the Academy B/C/D kits.
