How to mask a 1/144th aircraft canopies
Posted by Matt Sawyer on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 11:14 AM

I was working on some 1/144th scale P-40s from AFV Club, and am having trouble masking the canopies. Any thoughts on how too?

Decal strip would probably be your best bet.

Depending on how well defined the frames are you can try using Bare Metal Foil and cutting with a new hobby knife blade. I use this a lo in larger scales but no reason to think it wouldn't work here. Just more tedious. Or, with tape, mask all the parallel frames in 1 direction 1st then go the other way.

For complicated canopies in any scale, I use a time-consuming but easy to do scheme- I mask each line seperately- two usually parallel pieces of tape-paint-when dry remove tape and move on to next line.  It works in 1:144 canopies and windows/windshields too.  I use the narrowest tape I have on hand, but width is really unimportant, as you can cover up previously painted lines, or ones to do later.  Painting is by brush- I see no need to airbrush really narrow lines.

I have noticed, when masking canopies with Bare Metal Foil that some glue can remain after removing the foil masks.  I find isopropyl alcohol will remove that residue without harming the canopy.
