Revell F-84G Thunderjet (1/48) WIP

Hello all. I usually don't do WIPs, but I think I may start to lean more in this direction. What we have here is The Revell F-84G (1/48 as always.) This is a rebox of the ProModler kit, save the PE fret with ladder, perforated airbrake, ect. and new decals. From my understanding, when Revell announced (late 90s) they were doing a Thunderjet, Tamiya put one of their own together, and got on the shelves before Revell was able to. Originally, the Tamiya kit was hailed as a superior kit. However as the years went on, it was discovered that it had a few major flaws over the Revell kit. From my research, it seems the Tamiya tail is not quite the correct shape, which in itself isn't that bad. But then the fuselage seems to be too.. I guess "fat" behind the cockpit to the tail, would be the best way I can describe it. Now I'm not a rivet counter, so these things normally don't bother me. But when you can get a more accurate kit, Revell, for less $$$ than the Tamiya, why wouldn't you? The real tragedy of all this is that alot of AM decals (Aeromaster in particular) are designed to fit the Tamiya kit, so from what I have read, some trimming is required to get them on the Revell kit.

This Revell kit isn't your daddies Revellogram kit. Panel lines are recessed and petite, fit is almost glove like. Decals look VERY usable, fairly thin, and not too glossy. It can be had for a song and a dance of Ebay if one keeps an eye out.

For me, construction started in... The main wheel bays! (Threw you off their, didn't I?) This kit is designed with the walls of the wheel bay as separate parts, so you have a higher level of detail than you normally would if they were molded integrally with the wing its self.

Now I have discovered one boo-boo, with the instructions. On the left wing, Revell has mixed up parts 85 and 87. Now anyone with any sort of cognitive function will figure this out within a few seconds, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Here is one bay built up, and one before build up.

Other odds and ends I have done. I've put together the intake ramp/front gear bay, wing pylons and a pair of 1000 pounders. The kit comes with some HVARs, a Mk 7 nuclear device, and what are described as a pair of 250 lbs bombs. Compared with a set of TD 500 lbs bombs I have, they are identical in size and shape, so I believe they are 500 lbs bombs. The bomb stenciling provided on the decal sheet is for 250 lbs bombs, so those of you that are sticklers for accuracy may want to find a different set if stencils if you use the kit bombs.

But I am not worried about it, as I borrowed a pair of 1000 lbs bombs from a Revellogram B-25, which I have 10 or 11 of, so they surely won't be missed down the road.

I have the ProModeler boxing in the stash, and it looks like a really nice kit, but I noticed the decal for the pinup art on the plane is garbage. I might try my hand at making my own, but time will have to tell on that one since I have no idea when I'll get around to it. In the meantime I'll live vicariously and watch you build yours.

Here I have installed the panels with the blow out doors under the cockpit. These were installed to pop open and provide additional air flow to the engine while on the ground.

And here are the completed wings, with the panel where the mid-air refueling boom receptacle was.

The blow in doors, along with the refueling port, are exclusive to the G model. Revell made them this way so they could also make an E model, with blanks going in those spots. The E also comes with a frameless canopy (although all Es were later retrofitted with the reinforced one) and possibly a shorter tail cone? Also it had a different air brake design (which I'll cover in my next post) and that about covers it for the differences between the two. So some clever kit design by Revell allowed them to make two separate models by just changing one sprue of parts.

You're gonna enjoy this project. I built the E version of this kit a few years back and it really was VERY sweet! All I did was add a PE harness to the bang seat, and WOW! Everything else, except for markings as I wanted a Korean War Mig killer, was OOB. I have the Pro Modeler G still in my stash to do one day. A great value for the price.

The E was actually the very first "nice" model kit I ever purchased, a few weeks after my high school graduation about a decade ago. Even with my bad modeling skills, it still went together fast and relatively clean. Its sitting at my moms house about 90% completed with half the decals on it.

And its crazy how much bang for you buck you get. I just bought an E this evening on Ebay (going to finish what I started when I was 18) for under 15 bucks. Heck you can get the G brand new in shrink wrap shipped to your door for under $20. I really don't understand why it is priced so low. Its one of the nicest Revellogram kits to date.
