Well, it's a year plus later, and I finally "finished" this monster project.  Probably wasn't the best kit to start on, because it was a mess.  5 of 6 propellors broken, and several parts misshapen, bent, and poor fit.

Was a bit reluctant to even post a picture because it's nowhere near the build quality I usually see here.  I see a million flaws but, for an old man with shaky hands and poor eyesight, I would say I'm 90% happy with it.

She looks absolutely GRET!  Creat a thread for her with pictures all around and several close ups.  People will love to see your work.

Hope you had a blessed Christmas and that you have a wonderful new year!

She looks GREAT!

All of us make little mistakes we have to fix.

The way it looks after all of that is what counts and she looks really good!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all the comments.  Much appreciated.

I want to give a shout out to viking73, who kindly sent me the 92nd BW decals which allowed me to mark the plane as one my father worked on.

Well, it looks like you overcame the hurdles pretty well!  That's a great finish and an impressive model.  Well done!

No need to be reluctant, finishing that model is a 1% deal, 99% don't start or put it back on the shelf.  It looks fine to me.  Nice glass work and decaling.

Flight Engineer to pilot, "six turning and four burning".

Great build.

Yep...she would ahve ten engines going when needed!  An amazing feat of technology for its time frame and at that time, n other nation on earth could really challenege her.

It was a great build.  Thanks for looking and responding!

God's speed.

Revell sold a -225, but it's 1/144. That's a good scale for these monsters.

Hehehe...if you guys ever want to try a really BIG 1/72 scael model...and I beleive it is the largest there is...then try Anigrand's resin, 1/72 scael C-5 Galaxy!

41" long and 37" wingspan.

I pulled the trigger on one of those kits back in 2011.  From top to bottom, all 1/72nd, KC-135, C-5, B-52, B-36.

Tanks for that comparison.  The C-5 is just simply huge.

Imaine (and I think Anagrand or someone else my have one) of the Soviet Antonoc An-225.  I do know that Modelsvit is looking at nmarketing one in 2019:

https://www.facebook.com/modelsvit/photos/a.1859368940998815.1073741830.1854784001457309/2094262810842759/?type=3&theater

Their latest post there on it went lik this:

"Dear friends,

Thank you for sharing your ideas, comments and remarks!

1/72 An-225 release is scheduled for 2019.

That will be a monster...."

oh my...going to need a warehouse

I hear ya, but for now, my circumstances allow me plenty of room for models.  I'll probably run out of time (retirement is getting really close) before I run out of space (living solo in a comfortable-sized house) for all these large kits I have in the stash.  I recently made up my mind to buy that 1/48th Concorde kit from HPH.  Bigger kits are easier on the eyes.

Great job on this build! I built one for my barber shop and got the Mk17 from Spectre for the bomb bay---Mine didn't look nearly as good as yours-----its a tough build!

I remember these birds as I lived 3 miles from the end of the runway at Carswell--where Convair was located---they seemed to have at least 200 of those monsters there during 1952--1954. Really cool if you were 7 years old!! Wow--were they noisy!

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to build the 1/48 scale bird (its large) and may need to scratch build some of the smaller nukes for it.

Jeff,

I'm glad to see the reports of your demise were greatly exaggerated!  My sister also had chordoma, and hers progressed much faster that yours.  We lost her in Feb 2017.

I'm glad to see you are still up, around, and building models.

Godspeed, my friend!

Gary

Thank you so much.

It got into my soft tissue, including my liver, in 2016.  I first found out about the Chordoma which had filled my entire sacrum in 2009, and had my entire sacrum removed in 2010 which involved three very long and very extensive surgeries, the shortest of which was 14 hours, the longest of which was 21 hours.

In 2016 they pronounced it terminal and gave me 3-4 months to live...but it has not progressed rapidly like others have from that point.  I can not say exactly why other than to believe that the good Lord has more for me to do here on earth before He brings me home.

Thank you again for your concern and your prayers.  God's speed and His blessings to you and yours!

From viewing Jeff's profile, it appears he is no longer with us.  If anyone else following the thread has built this behemoth, I have a question.

I also plan to add all the intricate wing decals, and I'm thinking it might be easier to work with by applying them all before attaching the wings to the fuselage.  Has anyone done it that way, or are there issues I'm unaware of?

Thanks.

The only issue I could see is that if you need to mask the joint for putty/ paint; that could damage the decals.

I did it a different way that I thought worked well.

I dont remember if there is a raised line or anything to position the decals, but it's easy to do the following.

Paint a black line wherever there would be a stripe. Use the right width of thin tape to mark the lines. Then paint the silver over that. I thought it looked pretty good.

Hello, fellow B-36 fans.

I'm retired with time on my hands and have recently returned to modeling after a 50 year break.  I recently purchased a Monogram 5703 B36 model on EBay, and found this thread while looking for building tips.

My late father was a B-36 Master Mechanic who was assigned to both the 72d SRW at Ramey AFB, PR and  92d BW at Fairchild AFB, WA.  I was stationed at Chanute from 1975 to 78, and he loved to walk around the behemoth and reminisce.

He lived in Illinois, and was "drafted" to assist in preparing the Chanute plane for transfer to Castle AFB.  My brother was an aircraft mechanic assigned at Castle at the time, and went TDY to Chanute.  I believe they spent over a month on the mammoth task, and my dad was in hog heaven.  My brother marveled that dad knew and remembered so much about the workings of that plane.

He had one of these models hanging in his home, and I'm building this one in his honor.  I hope mine turns out half as well as yours.  Great detailed writeup!

Jeff: Speaking of the Anigrand kit, here's some photos my wife and I took of that kit along with their KC-10, both in 1/72. A very impressive diorama to say the least! This was taken at an IPMS show in Dayton,Ohio in 2016.

KC-10_C-5A_72_02

All I can say to that is WOW!  Just, WOW!

Those two huge aircraft together.

That C-5B in 1/72 scale, a 41" long and with a 37" wingspan,  has to be the largest scale model on the market.  The Russian aircraft would be bigger, but I do not know if anyone makes one.

Here's a site where anothjer guy bnuilt the C-5B.

http://www.ninfinger.org/karld/My%20Space%20Museum/c-5.htm

He did a sterlinbg job...but having the DC-10 refueling the C-5B is unbeatable.

They (ANnigrand) do make a 1/72 C141 and C00141B, as well as the C-17 (which I am eyeing).

My next Anigrand model though will probably be the F8U-3 in honor of my Dad who was the principle dynamics engineer at Vought Aeronautics at the time and was a lead on the F-7, F-8 Crusaer, A-7 Corsair II, the XF8U-3, and the XC-142A.

He has been gone now for 14 years, but long ago I made hm a three aircraft display of the F-7, F-8E, and A-7E in 1/72 scale when he retired in the late 1990s. (Thise were the ones that got into production and were deployed all over the world.
