They worked initially, then the Luftwaffe figured out what was going on.  

That's correct: the turret was an unpleasant surprise. The Defiant had 2 main problems: no forward armament and an underpowered engine.

Yeah, with a better engine the Defiant would have been much more formidable, can't do much with a sluggish plane. I think I remember reading somewhere about the USN flying Avengers in fighter formations and allowing the Japanese to 'jump' them and get a face full of lead from their rear gunners.

That is one very cool build!

I bought a couple of those kits one for me and one for my son.

I LOVE the new AIRFIX and what they are doing. The detail is extraordinary and the kit goes together very well.

I am also looking forward to the 1/72 B-17; 1/48 Gloster Meteor and Defiant as well.

Recently picked up a couple of the new HE-111 that is one awesome kit!!!
