1/48 Eduard Bf 108 B; 1937 Isle of Man Air Rally (WIP)

Well, its time I step up to the plate and deliver a WIP build.  Personally, I am an enthusiast of all things pre-war to 1945 Luftwaffe.  The stories, the history, the personalities, the vehicles… it all appeals to me.  So, this particular offering will focus on the 1/48 Eduard Bf 108 B-1 with 1937 Isle of Man Air Rally colors and markings.  I’ll dress it up with fantastic Techmod Decals, an Eduard color zoom set, and finally wrap it up in a nice RLM 24 Dunkelblau.  The two 108’s sent to the Isle of Man Air Rally were essentially showcase vehicles, and as shown in the pic below, had a nice glossy finish.

According to published records of the Rally results, the particular aircraft I’m building finished either 2nd, as flown by then Major Hans Seidmatin, or 3rd as flown by Herr Ernst Gerbrecht.  I’ve tried to lock down exactly which of the two was D-IHDD but to no avail.  Anyway, when the war broke out, the 108 was relegated to military roles that primarily included transportation for senior staff and Diplomats and other liaison duties.  In fact, Willy Messerschmitt used many of the unique characteristics of the 108 in development of the 109.  Items such as retractable landing gear, an enclosed cockpit, and leading edge slats were applied to the Bf 109 which ultimately helped him win the RLM monoplane fighter contract and the rest, as they say, is history.

At first glance, the Eduard kit looks to be an easy build (famous last words) and is loaded with some great surface details.  There appears to be a nicely detailed Argus engine but I don’t know how much will be visible through the cooling portal below the propeller hub assembly.  The clear parts are in great shape and will receive an Eduard mask set after a nice dip in Future.

Research material for this exact rally aircraft is completely relegated to the net.  In fact, there isn’t a lot of literature currently on the market focusing on this gem of an aircraft.  The materials I have on-hand are shown below.  There’s a few pictures peppered within each book for useful weathering information.  Although, this particular vehicle will be showroom clean.

Well thats all for now.  Thanks for looking!

That is a great series of books. I am glad i purchased them as they were coming out. my son is now looking at them.

I saw the real deal at the 1995 Dayton Air Show when they had a collection of all sorts of WW2 aircraft; German, American, and British and the ME-108 was there and it FLEW !!!!

Always a cool aircraft-many of us have seen it in a couple of war movies like

"The Great Escape" and "Von Ryan's Express" where they tried to tell yopu those were ME-109's !!! I think they tried to do that in the 1964 Movie D-Day too. Not any more,  viewers would call em out on it now.

Thanks guys!  Well, I found out how fragile the Eduard canopies can be.  This is my first Eduard kit, and up until now, I’ve primarily built only Airfix red box kits to transition myself back into the hobby after a long absence.  The airfix canopies are thicker and stronger but lack in clarity compared to the Eduard 108 canopy.  I gave the canopy the ol’ microfiber polish after I dipped it in Future and let dry.  The canopy not only cracked but shattered into about 4 pieces!  Bang Head   While waiting for a replacement to come in, I’ve started an Eduard Fw 190 A-8 and let me tell you, the canopy has been handled with great care!

@Blacktulip:  I’m jealous if you have the complete set!  I lack about 4 or 5 books.  They are quite popular on the used market.  I think the cheapest one I’ve found that I still need was roughly $150!  Funny thing, I told my wife a while back that if a tornado ever blew through our house I’d grad my Luftwaffe Colours collection and my Eduard Royal Class kits.  Last Saturday an F3 rolled past our home in Rowlett, thankfully no damage, and I had neither my book nor my kits in the closet with us when we took shelter!  Shame on me!!

Thanks again guys, I’ll get progress pics up soon.  I have decided not to use the Eduard color zoom set on this one.  After seeing the fantastic quality of the instrument panel, I’ve decided to use the decal provided and MicroSol/Set it in place.  This worked well with my 1/72 panels.  A drop of future in each gauge and everything looked fine.  Hopefully I can get a similar result with this one.  I will make the Willy Messerschmitt personal aircraft version after I finish this one and use the zoom set on it.
