Airfix 72nd 109E-4 - completed photos
Posted by jgeratic on Thursday, December 24, 2015 4:02 PM

A fun little kit to build, but did add resin exhausts from Quickboost, along with machined brass guns from Master.  No swastikas were provided on the decal sheet, so only stencils and wing crosses were used.  Remainder of the markings were from other sources, plus some home made decals for the JG 26 emblem (gothic 'S' on white shield).

That's a vice looking build I like the wheel up look.

Did it come with the stand?

Thank you Checkmateking02, Bish, Drew Cook, Jim, blackdog62, MoparMadness, and Mike G.

Editing out the display stand was easy.  Just close cropped the image as much as possible, then erased what was still visible  in the white background.  The tricky part is where it's actually in the aircraft image.  All I did was use the eyedroper tool to pick up colours adjacent to the stand, and colored it out.  Do have to pay attention to detail - in this one I had redraw the corner of the  starboard radiator opening.

The display stand itself was from a Tamiya kit of the same type and scale of aircraft, similar to the image below:

I just simplified the attachment point by cutting it off, and drilling a hole to accept a brass rod.  I need to find a few more of these, as I do prefer the wheels up position when modeling aircraft.

One odd thing is the Airfix boxing would of been more appropriate to include this since they give a seated pilot, as well as a second set of landing gear designed for up postion - Tamiya has neither of these.

Jack

Jack - I've been following this in the group build, and I have to say you've done an excellent job with that one! It looks like it could get up and fly.

Well done!

Mighty nice model! Everything about it - the color scheme, the overall finish, the weathering - and the photography.

I think the return of the "in flight" stand to the hobby is a fine thing. So many aircraft look so...different in the air.

Airfix is selling stands separately now. Here's a link: http://www.airfix.com/us-en/shop/aircraft/accessories.html .

I've ordered a few things from the Airfix website, and the service has been good.

Thank you Toshi and jtilley.

I have been looking at those Airfix clear plastic stands, and they must be popular, as most webstores I visit, they are sold out.  Thanks for the link, that is where I'll most likely pick them up.

Thank you both, Chris and Allen.

One thing new (for me) that I tried with the weathering, was after it was all painted up, a brown filter was applied in the same manner that some people do pre shading of panel lines.  It's very subtle, and depending on taste, can be built up in several layers - even varying the instensity here and there.

Wow! That's one fine looking 109. I want to be able to paint and weather some of the aircraft kits I have in my stash 1/2 as well as you do it. If I could get to that level I'd be a happy camper.

Out of curiousity, what did you use for the antenna wire? It looks great.

Mike, thanks kindly.

The antenna wire is a similar product to EZ line, but is Uschi brand located in Europe.

http://www.uschivdr.com/products-in-detail/rigging/

I used their superfine line at 0.01mm.  For the little detailing at either end, that is just some drops of white glue painted black.

Jack
