Testors (Hawk) 1/48 Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka
Posted by stikpusher on Saturday, December 26, 2015 8:19 PM

I built this as part of a couple of GBs here, Weekend Madness 2015 & Japanese GB Pt. IV. Unfortunately for the WM GB, I did not have 48 hours free in the time span so this took a bit longer to complete. although it was completed with less than 48 hours at the bench. I added a good amount of scratch work to the cockpit, as well as a few other details here and there such as on the pitot tube and warhead fuse. The kit ID number decals shattered, so I had to scrounge some out of my decal bin. Paints are Tamiya, based upon some good color photos I found on various sites.

Great job on a dinosaur of a kit Stik!  I had the Testors boxing with the V-1, but gave the Ohka to a fellow modeler.

BTW, you forgot to add the orange icicles for the engines!

Nice work on that old kit.

But I'm puzzled as to how you could scratch build much of a cockpit....from what I recall, the old HAWK kit was only slightly more basic than the real thingWinkWhistling

I, too, miss the fluorescent icicle.Stick out tongue

Was my favorite detail option for the old HAWK V-1 and Me-163Big Smile

LOL! Thaks guys! Yeah the "flamecicles" are pretty cool, but once I thinned out the rocket nozzles to something approaching scale thickness, they were no longer an option.

Spruce, I found enough photos online and the details were very simple to create. If I had not tried to do this in 48 hours I could have really tricked out the cockpit...

Johnny and Real, I think I have more fun with old kits like this than with high parts count new tool uberkits...

I built the V-1 that came in this boxing on the side here but need to go back and do some corrections for accuracy. I have the Komet as well to tackle one day.

That is pretty cool. I am not familiar with that bird or kit. Nice work and fast too.

Thank you Brandon. The kit was originally released by Hawk at least 50 years ago, and probably longer than that. The bird itself was a suicide weapon. A manned rocket powered bomb carried to the target area under a mother aircaft such as a "Betty" bomber. It would be released, glide to the target area, and once the pilot saw a suitable target he would light off the rockets for a high speed dive into the target ship. They were first employed at Okinawa with very limited success. Most of the production run was saved for the defense of Japan against the anticipated US invasions that never came to pass.

Saweeet nostalgia !  Nice job on this little kit. TY for posting , it was a real treat to view your work .

I built several as a kid because it didn't take collecting many soda bottles to buy one. I think the hawk kit was less than 50 cents at the drug store, and  I still have the orange icicles around somewhere.  I remember that a Black Cat firecracker fit perfectly in the jet exhaust . Smile

I can totally relate to that, I love upgrading the older 60s/70s kits. Your Ohka looks really good Yes
