WIP Monogram 1/48 A-4E
Posted by ygmodeler4 on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 4:04 PM

Well I've gotten many projects finished up, and I have a couple other ones to the spot where I'm ready to airbrush, but it has finally gotten cold here in VA so that'll have to wait.

I've decided to start a WIP thread, haven't done that in a long while. I've chosen Monogram's A-4E in 1/48 for the subject, and I shall try to build it OOB. I got this kit at IPMS Nats back when it was in VA beach (or Hampton or some such place down there) a couple years ago. The decals look a little rough but I'll see what I can do, I really like the USMC scheme showed on the box art but I may have to look for some AM decals.

This seems like it'll be a quick little build, though it may get dragged out as life and other hobbies often interfere with my time at the bench.

And here's where I'm at so far. I won't bore you with detail pics yet, as the cockpit just has the base coat. Typical monogram (at least with jets), the kit is pretty well detailed. The cockpit is a little sparse but it is good enough for me. According to scalemates this is the 1977 release, it shows (in a good way) because there is pretty much no flash on the moldings, a welcome sight after building Lindberg's USS Missouri.

Thanks for looking, I shall try not to make yall wait too long for progress...

I made this kit when I was nine years old and I was so excited with the decals on this kit!  I'll be following this build.

Thanks for checking in Toshi, I too think the decals are pretty cool, sadly they are pretty yellowed and I havent been able to find any AM decals so Ill probably habe to end up doing the window trick.

Ah, I loved that kit as a kid. I still have fond memories of those markings. There are a couple of aftermarket sets out there. I think one is for an M, but no one would be able to tell to be honest. Enjoy the build. It's a fun one.

I was browsing eBay and there are a couple of sets for sale if you are still looking for them.

Josiah, I have quite a few aftermarket decal sets for A-4s, but no kits to use them on. Let me know, and I'll send you a listing of what I have, if you're interested.

Excellent job so far on your Scooter!

Looking good so far. I remember seeing this kit on shelves in the 80s. Never could afford it back then.  Or any 1/48 kit for that matter. lol

Thank you all for the comments, sorry it has taken so long to get back to y'all. I have made some more progress, almost ready for paint. When I do reach that point I will put some more pics up. This kit really does go together quite well. Gary, thanks for the offer, however, as of now I may have it taken care of.
