When like ww2, modern,or ww1

 

mostly WWII I would guess most modern aircraft have a full suite of stencils

I am pretty sure that they would be applied over the fresh paint as they are important to the maintenance of the craft, to get the correct datums for weight and  ballance, fuel/oil to be used, the plane's serial # with empty and MAU weights ect.

Besides they were quick and easy to apply.

What's the concensus on using stencils on aircraft. Especially war birds. We're they just painted over as needed or were they replaced
