I remember the old "Detail and Scale " F-4 books detailing those conversions when the quality of the offerings were so bad then. Lots of good options out of the box nowadays.

Yeah that seems to be the consensus. I haven't done ALL the research other than looking at length and wingspan specs. One of the guys in my local club is a member of the Phantom Society and said what an undertaking it is. He offered to sell me a J kit out of his stash so I'll probably take him up on that.

Why? Be cheaper to buy a 1/72 Phantom F-4J then to convert the 'F' and less stressfull too.

The F-4F was based off of the F-4E which was a completely different airframe in almost every way to the Navy F-4's. You would have to do a lot to make it a. J

Hmmmm, very odd ball conversion. Going that route is so hard it makes no sense. You'd need a new cockpit, new slotted wings, but unslotted stabs, new wheels, completely new nose (it's also shorter) new engine exhaust, different inner pylons, different tail... And the list goes on and on...

F-4F to F-4J Conversion
Posted by miker42 on Friday, January 15, 2016 7:30 PM

I just aquired the Revell 1/72 F4-F Phantom II and was wanting to find out the best way to convert it to a F-4J. Is there a way? Looks like I would have to at least saw off the cannon housing under the nose. But beyond that I'm at a loss as to what would be involved.
