Alclad II over Tamiya acrylic
Posted by Shipwreck on Friday, February 12, 2016 4:47 PM

I am about to paint a B-29 with Alclad II. The interior is painted with Tamiya acrylics. The first coat on the canopy exterior is acrylic, the same as the interior. Can I paint the Alclad directly on the acrylic canopy frame or do I need a barrier like Future?

I'm unsure how Future would hold up Shipwreck.  Certainly, a flat coat would hold up well.  Typically, laquers should go down first before acrylics and not the other way around, but I've been finding out that I get away with a lot of rule breaking (or bending rather) provided certain things are happening i.e. thin coats, coats of a clear flat, etc.  I recently caught a video on youtube from doog's channel....never even knew he had one =]. In the video he did some trial and error with different primer coats to see how it would affect the finish.  Give it a look see and decided for yourself.

It all really depends on the outcome you're trying to accomplish. But it certainly seems possible.  The only thing you may find is how well the laquer paint bonds to the plastic.  If there's an acrylic "barrier" in between it and the plastic then you may end up with paint peeling in certain situations.  Just a thought.
