Another way to go is to have a stout L shaped bar, the horizontal end stuck into the tail, and the vertical some inches hehind her, down to the base.

Theres been some really nice mounts done where the a/c is about to smack the end of the runway, and the modeler makes the runway ### "smeared" giving a sense of motion.

If you go with the payload bay idea, I second Paul and suggest that you install a piece of tubing from the upper underside of the bay up to the roof. That gives you more glue surface up there, and the aircraft can then be placed down onto a dowel that slips up inside the tube. I do that with my ships.

Oh last thought. Give her some "attitude" front back left right.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks Paul,

I neglected to say that the payload bay door is open and the interior finished, so you would see the tube when looking in, although it would indeed make it twice as strong.  Something to think about, which I hadn't.

I recommend that you make the mounting tube longer and have it extend to the top of the fuselage interior. Cap off the top of the tube to increase the bonding surface. If you're careful, you can place a dab of epoxy on the top of the tube, insert it into the model through the hole in the belly, and press it up against the inside of the fuselage at the top. Epoxy around the tube where it passes through the hole and you've effectively doubled the strength of the mount.

In-flight base mounting an airplane model ?

Posting this here as opposed to the techniques forum for obvious reasons.

As I come to the finish of my 1/72 A400  I find that the weight of this model is almost too much for the wheels. One has already broken off.

I'd like to mount this on a 6 inch high dowel  for an "In-flight" look (aluminum or styrene tube or possibly  1/2" evergreen styrene square) drilled into a wood base and then at the other end into the bottom of the fuselage.

I can find the balance point on the model. The only problem I see is that after I drill the bottom of the model, I need to strenghten the point of contact of the dowel against the airplane, which in this case would be the bottom of the payload bay floor. I was thinking some version of liquid nails extreme, although they don't recommend for plastic.

A smaller model would be easy but this is a big model.  I would appreciate any help in thinking about solutions to this.   Thanks Men!
